Location of University of Brighton

The Institute of Postgraduate Medicine (IPGM) will be integrated with Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) in August 2012. BSMS is a joint school of the universities of Brighton and Sussex. Integrating IPGM and BSMS will provide a sustainable basis for the further development of postgraduate medical education, in continued partnership with the KSS Deanery, the University of Brighton's Faculty of Health and local education providers.

As part of this integration, a number of IPGM courses will be redeveloped for joint validation by the universities of Brighton and Sussex. The intention is that the first intake for the new courses will be in September 2012 and the admissions criteria for these will be published in early 2012.

Admissions for this course for 2011 will not be affected by this development and we welcome applications in line with the entry requirements.

These courses meet the needs of doctors and other senior health and environmental colleagues in delivering and managing the public health and/or environmental agenda. Participants gain an understanding of public health issues and the various roles of all the professionals involved in both the statutory and non-statutory sectors.

Career and progression opportunities
The courses provide a strong platform for professional development and enhanced career progression. They also open opportunities for research at PhD and MPhil level.

Course structure
Integrated within the university's health and social science graduate programme, the courses utilise a variety of teaching and learning techniques, including drawing on the work experience of participants. It provides valuable cross-disciplinary experience through common modules shared with other courses in the scheme. Most courses are delivered intensively over one week.

Areas of study
Study includes the techniques required to undertake epidemiological studies, approaches to environmental impact on health matters, mechanisms of partnership working, and wider issues relating to the health of the population.

There are three core modules - Elements of Public Health, Research Methods and Critical Appraisal, and Epidemiology. Each module requires three separate full-time working weeks.

A wide choice of additional options, including education and management, may include modules from other schools and faculties. Both the Education and Management awards require three specialist modules in place of two options. The MSc award requires a 16,000-word dissertation.
