An innovative postgraduate programme in commissioning designed for clinicians, managers, and health/social care professionals who are commissioning health and social services. Work-based projects, individual skills development and academic theory are combined, and students benefit from the expertise of both the Brighton Business School and Institute of Postgraduate Medicine (IPGM). Lecturers are from both policy and practice settings to base learning in real issues and practice.
Career and progression opportunities
Graduates will be one of the few nationally to hold postgraduate commissioning qualifications in this evolving field, and are equipped to progress rapidly in a commissioning career.
Course structure
The programme is designed for part-time study (though can be taken full-time). IPGM modules are delivered largely on two or three-day blocks to enable students to fit study in with work time more easily.
Areas of study
Commissioning in the Market provides a thorough introduction to markets, commissioning policy, and the unique issues public services face. Students are able to apply the theoretical knowledge that they have learned on a practical skills-based simulation on 'commissioning in a market'. Expert advisors act as mentors.
Leadership for Health Professionals offers insights into effective leadership models, and will enable students to perform well as leaders.
Knowledge Management offers an opportunity to apply knowledge management techniques and models to health and social care challenges.
Options in year 2 allow students to focus on their personal career and academic interests by choosing between modules on Exploring and Managing Partnerships, Managing Finance in the Public Services, Quality and Patient Safety, Social Marketing, Behavioural Economics, Managing in the Public and Voluntary Sectors, or Strategy and Planning in the Public and Voluntary Sectors.
In Year 3 students identify a 'live' commissioning project, which is agreed and jointly supervised by the university and a senior employer, as a combined academic and work-based project. It offers a practical work benefit to employers, and a career-enhancing senior level project to students.
Year 3 also includes the Research Methods and Critical Appraisal module. This will strengthen students' use of research to change practice in services, and enable them to critically appraise data and information for commissioning.
