The CPE, or Common Professional Examination, is the route by which non-law graduates may complete the academic stage of training to become solicitors and barristers.

Holders of this award are eligible (subject to professional body requirements) to proceed to the vocational stage of training - the Legal Practice Course for would-be solicitors, and the Bar Vocational Course for would-be barristers.

Career and progression opportunities
Although the course is primarily aimed at those who aspire to qualify as a barrister or solicitor, it is also highly relevant to a range of other occupations with a significant law aspect such as consumer, housing and welfare advice work, social work, the prosecution service and the police.

Course structure
Students are required to attend from September to July each year, one day per week (part-time over two years) or two days a week (full-time over one year). The course begins with an intensive Legal System, Method and Skills unit, followed by four further units studied concurrently for the remainder of the year. In addition to the taught units, the project requires a significant piece of self-managed independent legal research.

Areas of study
Students acquire a sound knowledge of the English legal system and process, those areas of law considered to be fundamental to any study of law (the seven 'foundations of legal knowledge') and at least one other area of legal study. The course also develops facility in legal research, problem-solving, critical analysis, communication and flexibility.
