The Master of Mathematical Sciences is focused on applications of mathematics (operations research, applied probability and stochastic processes, statistics, numerical analysis and scientific computing). This degree positions ideally for a career in various fields such as financial mathematics, banking and insurance, data analysis, industrial modelling and computation. It can also be a springboard for research in applied mathematics.
The Master in Mathematical Sciences offers two orientations: Applied mathematics and Statistics and finance.
The aim of the orientation Applied Mathematics is a broad training in a variety of mathematical topics. The second orientation Statistics & Finance trains its graduates in the fields of mathematical finance and statistics.
Contents
The 120 ECTS Master programme in Mathematical Sciences offers two orientations:
* Applied mathematics (operations research, applied probability and stochastic processes, statistics, numerical analysis, scientific computing)
* Statistics and Finance (statistical theory, applied stochastic processes,mathematical finance.
Both orientations consist of :
- 2 semesters of courses (60 ECTS)
- 1 semester of engineering internship (30 ECTS)
- 1-semester Master's thesis (30 ECTS) in a research lab (EPFL or partner university)
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Anyone holding a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university can apply to the EPFL Masters Programmes. However, please be aware that admission is competitive. Only candidates with excellent academic records and references have good chances to be accepted.
The Master programme of Mathematical Sicences is taught in English and French (some courses in English, others in French). The EPFL recommends students entering the programme to have at least a B2 level of the teaching languages (defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for languages scale). A C1 level would allow candidates to follow the courses in good conditions.
Accreditation
EPFL offers 22 programmes of study leading to the master's degrees, in line with the Bologna system, either in 90 ECTS or 120 ECTS (depending on the program).
The programs offer great flexibility with regard to choice of subjects, trans-disciplinary perspectives and some novel re-orientation opportunities towards other scientific domains. A large choice of complementary 30 ECTS minors are available, adding flexibility and depth in the education of our engineers.
