The Leiden University Institute for History has a broad and wide-reaching academic scope.

The Master's Programme in History is an accurate reflection of this academic range and offers you the chance to obtain a degree based on your own particular interests and ambitions. To enable you to pursue your own interests as much as possible, the various specialisations have a thematic focus. Within these specialisations there are also possibilities to concentrate on Maritime History, Political Debate, Economic History, or Archival Studies. Its strong international orientation and focus on the study of European and non-European history in a global context gives the Leiden MA in History a unique character in the Netherlands. The wide range of chairs in history which include most European and non-European areas, combined with the unique archive material available in Leiden University and in nearby The Hague facilitates a study of nearly all areas of the world.

Specialities:

Ancient History:

In this specialisation you will study the history of the Greek and Roman period, with a focus on the history of the mentality and social and economic history in the period 400 B.C. â 400 A.D.

Europaeum programme European History and Civilisation: Leiden-Oxford-Paris Programme:

A unique specialisation in European History and Civilisation jointly offered by Leiden University, Université Paris I â Panthéon/Sorbonne and the University of Oxford.

Migration and Global Interdependence:

The specialisation focuses on issues such as migration, integration, discrimination, urbanisation, citizenship, social cohesion, civil society, global interactions and economic crises.

Medieval and Early Modern European History:

This specialisation focuses on the momentous cultural and political transformations that characterised the period between 1300-1700.

Political Culture and National Identities:

In this specialisation you will study the political culture and national identity of a number of European countries (between c. 1800-2010), viewed from an international perspective.

Archival Studies:

In this specialisation you will focus on acquiring the knowledge and skills expected of an archivist in order to be able to provide users of historical archives with professional guidance.

European Expansion and Globalisation:

In this specialisation you will focus on the global interaction between Europe and the other continents including Asia, Africa and the Americas.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
