Location of Leiden University

The MA in Latin American Studies offers a multidisciplinary programme with emphasis on the contemporary reality of the region.

The Master's makes use of scholarly contributions coming from several academic disciplines such as modern history, literature, and linguistics, as well as from the social sciences, and has a strong focus on research. Since this is the only European Master's programme outside Spain that is given in the Spanish language, it allows you to make use of state-of-the-art works and material produced by Latin American scholars. The programme utilises the close ties the Department of Latin American Studies (TCLA) has with various academic institutions and universities in Latin America, in order to provide you with a wide choice of research locations and specialisation options.

Contents

First Semester Research Seminar:
An intensive research seminar from mid-September to mid-October for each of the three specialisations. Students become familiar with the basic techniques of participatory observation, data collection, interview techniques and reporting.
Tutorial:
Students become acquainted with the current academic debates within the specialisation of their choice. Under the supervision of a lecturer, they write a research proposal that will serve as a basis for their research.
Research in Latin America:
From mid-November to late-January students conduct a research project in Latin America in order to collect materials for their Master´s thesis. The Department has an extensive network of contacts with local scholars who can provide the necessary local supervision. Students from Latin America who have come to the Netherlands in order to follow this Master´s programme may conduct similar research on a subject related to Latin America in the Netherlands or in a neighbouring country.
Second Semester Master´s course:
After research has been completed, a Master´s course follows in the chosen specialisation.
Master´s thesis:
The study programme is concluded with a Master´s thesis based on the student´s own original research. The thesis may be written in Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, or English

This programe has a workload of 60 ECTS.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
