The Research MA in Latin American Studies addresses both the communalities and the differences in historical, cultural and socio-political terms between Latin America and the Caribbean region.
It allows you to develop a particular expertise in the sub-regions involved: Latin America, Indo-America and the Caribbean, with a strong focus on the contemporary reality of the area. As a graduate of a two-year research master's degree you are qualified to work as a junior academic researcher in an academic environment or carry out further research work on a PhD programme. The programme is unique in the Netherlands, as no other Master's in the country congregates so many sub-regions of the Americas and disciplines in a single academic programme, making it the only accredited Research Master in this field in the Benelux. The possibility to carry out a short research project in a Latin American or Caribbean country makes the programme truly international. As a research-based master's taught by staff who focus their research and teaching on contemporary regional, socio-political and cultural realities, you can view the programme as a stepping stone to becoming an expert on the issues currently effecting the region, its people and its culture.
The programme consists of two specialisation tracks—Latin American Studies and Amerindian Studies. Although taught through separate departments and with diverging points of academic interest, together the two specialisations offer a balanced and harmonious take on the social and cultural complexity of the region.
The Department of Latin American Studies has a broad network of active contacts throughout the Latin American region, capable of offering you support during your research period. The department has connections at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina, the Universidad de Chile and the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico.
The Amerindian Studies track, meanwhile, unites the expertise of the Faculty of Archaeology and the Department of Indian American Languages and Cultures, who also have excellent contacts with colleagues throughout the Americas. The staff’s academic foci include:
With fields of research ranging from Mesoamerica to North America—and both departments recognised as primary study institutes of Mesoamerican iconography and Amerindian linguistics—Leiden, as the only institute in Europe that can offer you the chance to study such an array of regional languages and cultures, is at the forefront of teaching and research in this field.
This programme has a workload of 120 ECTS.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
