Location of School of Oriental and African Studies

The SOAS Law School offers ten different MA programmes in the field of international and comparative legal studies. Nine of these programmes are specialist programmes centred upon clusters of expertise and research interest within the Law School, the tenth programme (the MA in International and Comparative Legal Studies) is for those who want to study a variety of different subjects which do fall within the scope of any one particular programme.

Please note that all MA students need to take a two week Law and Legal Methods Pre-sessional Course before the teaching term begins.

Students are required to take three taught courses and a dissertation as follows:

  • At least two courses from the following options:
    • Economic Approaches to Law (15PLAH030) [0.5] half unit course Term 2
    • Human Rights and Islamic Law (15PLAC150)
    • Human Rights in the Developing World (15PLAC111)
    • Human Rights of Women (15PLAC112)
    • International Criminal Law in Practice (15PLAH028) [0.5] half unit course Term 2
    • International Human Rights Clinic (15PLAC145)
    • International Humanitarian Law (15PLAH022) [0.5] half unit course Term 2
    • International Labour Law (15PLAH029) [0.5] half unit course Term 1
    • International Law and Global Orders (15PLAH019) [0.5] half unit intensive course* Term 2
    • International Protection of Human Rights (15PLAC119)
    • Justice, Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Post-Conflict Societies (15PLAC123)
    • Migration, Gender, and the Law in South East Asia and Beyond half unit course Term 2 (15PLAH023)
    • Modern Chinese Law and Human Rights (15PLAC139)
    • The third option may be chosen from the General List, or can be from the above list
    • Dissertation (10,000 words), on a topic related to the specialism of the degree (15PLAC999)

The courses run from the start of term in September, and examinations take place at the end of May/ beginning of June. The final date for the submission of the dissertation is 15 September in the final year of registration.

* This intensive course takes place over two weeks in Term 2. If you have no Public International Law at BA/LLB level, you will need to pair International Law and Global Orders (15PLAH019) with the half unit course Foundations of International Law (15PLAH021) which is taught in Term 1.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Applicants should have a first or good second class honours bachelors degree from a UK university, or equivalent, in a subject appropriate to that of the programme to be followed. As an approximate comparison, an equivalent BA from a US university would have a Grade Point Average of either 3.3 or 3.5 depending on the awarding university. If an applicant does not have a bachelors degree in an appropriate field s/he may be required to complete a qualifying year or a one year diploma before entering the masters programme. Relevant work experience may also be taken into consideration. Individual courses may have specific entry requirements, so you are advised to consult the postgraduate prospectus for further information.

English language requirements

In order to ensure that SOAS students have a sufficient standard of English to study effectively, we require overseas students to submit evidence, during the application process, of their current level of proficiency.

Score for Unconditional Entry

  • IELTS: Overall 7+ with at least 7 in all sub scores
  • TOEFL: iBT105+ with at least 25 in all sub scores
  • Pearson Test of English - Academic: Score of 75 or above with at least 70 in all sub scores
