All of the options within the Clinical Pharmacy MSc are suitable for practising pharmacists who wish to develop their careers and gain an additional clinical qualification. The specialist and learning skills you acquire are highly sought after in many different sectors of practice. Having an MSc is recognised by some employers (eg some hospital trusts) as a stepping stone in career progression.


Contents

The course philosophy is to provide a variety of learning activities which will enable you to meet your CPD requirements and to continually improve the quality of the clinical care delivered to patienzts. To ensure the course is kept up-to-date and relevant it has recently undergone some innovative changes which will provide greater flexibility and choice. The different options now available are:

* The Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy is particularly suitable for most pharmacists working directly with patients
* The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy is suitable for pharmacists working in all sectors of pharmacy who wish to improve their clinical knowledge and application of this to patient care.
* The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (Independent Prescribing) is suitable for pharmacists who wish to work directly with patients and have scope within their job to use independent prescribing
* The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (Research Methods) is suitable for pharmacists who wish to complete their MSc, or those who wish to become more involved in formulary development or strategic medicines management
* The Clinical Pharmacy MSc equips pharmacists with research skills and knowledge, and gives the opportunity to carry out a research project within an area of clinical pharmacy or pharmacy practice. It is suitable for pharmacists with an interest in a particular area they would like to research or for pharmacist who wish to expand their role into teaching and research.

The ethos of the programme is designed to enhance a 'real life' approach by:

* Providing most of the teaching through distance-learning
* Having a supportive team of tutors and administrators available to answer queries
* Encouraging you to develop more effective learning skills. This enables you to continue learning throughout your career
* Using assessments that can be applied to your work situation
* Encouraging you to improve your professional skills, for example problem solving, communication and presentation skills
* Fulfilling the CPD requirements of the GPhC.

The MSc has been designed to reflect a broad strategic approach to medicines management and the core themes running throughout the module fit in with these four steps in medicines management:

* Selection of the correct and appropriate drug (through evidence based practice and prescribing guidelines)
* Ensuring and enabling partnership in medicine taking (concordance)
* Getting the right drug to the right patient at the right time (dispensing)
* Outcome monitoring (compliance and clinical outcomes).

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

You should be a registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or Pharmaceutical Society Northern Ireland (PSNI) and practising in the UK; if you are in Southern Ireland you should discuss whether or not the course will meet your needs with the programme leaders. You should be in a patient-facing role, having contact with patients for the equivalent of at least one day a week.

There are 2 intakes a year in September and March.

Academic entry criteria

You should have a degree in Pharmacy, such as BSc (Pharm), BPharm or MPharm. Applications are welcomed from pharmacists with degrees from other countries who are practising as registered pharmacists in the UK.
