The Research Master's in Linguistics is a specialised research-based programme run by the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL).

Tapping into the vast array of languages taught and studied at Leidenmore than at any other academic institution in the Netherlands or neighbouring countriesyou will have access to internationally-renowned research programmes led by senior researchers, many of whom have been awarded prestigious academic grants. As a graduate of a two-year research master's degree you are qualified to work as a junior academic researcher in an academic environment or carry out further research work on a PhD programme. What can you expect from the programme? At the core of LUCL you'll discover academic excellence, diversity and research. With a strong tradition in applying various approaches to language variation and language changein syntax, phonology, semantics and other fieldsyou will concentrate on developing your academic path through original research. Each year, for example, LUCL appoints five to ten PhD students, mostly within externally-funded projects, who continue the research methods they were taught in the MPhil programme. In addition, numerous conferences, workshops and lecture series are organised and attended by the faculty's multi-national staff and student body.

Contents

In the first three semesters, there are three obligatory courses (one in each semester):

  • Approaches to diversityYou will discuss a number of different approaches to diversity-including a component on the history of linguistics-and learn to find out about the rich variety and commonalities of the languages of the world.
  • Samples of linguistic structure: AnalysisThis course consists of a presentation and discussion of the structural characteristics of several unrelated languages, and takes the form of intensive workshops taught by language specialists.
  • Samples of linguistic structure: Typology In this course, languages-or language stages-exhibiting typological differences and similarities will be discussed from a cross-linguistic perspective. Led by an academic expert, you will explore the precise extent of these differences and similarities.

In addition to these required core courses you will follow language study, tutorials and/or electives each semester. By the end of the first year, you will select a supervisor and a general thesis area. Your thesis, written in the fourth semester, will contain an original research project. If you opted for a certain theme, at least 40 ects of the optional courses as well as your thesis are theme-specific. Besides researching and writing the thesis, you will be able to contribute to an academic discussion based on your research results.

Specialisations

The MPhil in Linguistics provides you with a large and varied selection of subjects and languages. As a result, there is freedom to create your own specialisation-it is also possible, however, in collaboration with the director of studies to outline a programme in specific areas of linguistics, e.g. with a focus on syntax, or a language family (Romance, Slavic, etc.).

Research/PhD

For those whose ambition it is to pursue an academic career, a PhD track is the next step. The central component of the individual PhD track consists of carrying out a research project under expert supervision, and writing a dissertation reporting on this research. PhD students are directly associated with a research institute. In addition, they follow a number of courses, some of which are offered by the relevant national research school. The procedure for admission to the PhD track is conducted by means of job applications.

This programme has a workload of 120 ECTS.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
