The M.Sc. in Transport and Maritime Economics (MTME), a doctoral programme in fact, leading to a Ph.D. in Transport and Maritime Economics is intended for young university/college graduates and provides a high purposive scientific training that is needed to do scientific research in the field of transport economics and maritime management. Work experience is not an entry requirement for the MTME programme.

The Ph.D. programme in Transport and Maritime Economics offers a thorough scientific training in the field of transport and maritime economics combined with a specific management training. The Ph.D. students will work and study in an institute where education, research and practical knowledge are closely linked.

They will be introduced to a vast number of national and international experts, who are in close touch with ITMMA (e.g. guest lecturers). The special relationship that ITMMA has with numerous transport and maritime companies will allow the students to test their scientific knowledge against daily practice. These elements will guarantee that ITMMA will turn out high quality Ph.D.'s.

The Ph.D. in Transport and Maritime Economics will offer young university/college students the opportunity to:

  • develop a university career;
  • practice important research positions in companies and international organizations, both public and private;
  • act as 'go-between' or 'intermediary' for science and practice;
  • become a top executive in the industry and/or transport sector.

Those who obtain a Ph.D. in Transport and Maritime Economics at ITMMA have to be able to:

  • do independent research in the field of transport economics;
  • attract and supervise high-quality and /or revealing research;
  • lecture on university level;
  • link up connections between academic reasoning and practical needs;
  • perform outstandingly in top-level managerial positions;
  • offer solutions to important problems the transport and maritime industry is facing.

Requirements

One of the basic entry requirements for the M.Sc. in Transport and Maritime Economics (MTME) is a university or college degree (of a 4-year minimum full-time programme) in a relevant subject, with an overall mark of 'cum laude' or 'distinction' (i.e. some 70%).

Work experience is not an entry requirement.

Since the MTME programme is taught in English, all applicants must be able to read with ease, follow lectures and express their thoughts in fluent written and spoken English.

For students whose first language is not English, the following qualifications will meet the English language requirement for entry to the MTME programme:

  • a first degree from a European university or college;
    or a first degree from an overseas institution recognized by the Institute as providing adequate - evidence of proficiency in the English language;
  • a TOEFL A score of 550 minimum for the paper-based test (PBT) is required or 213 for the computer-based test (CBT), or 80 for TOEFL internet-based(iBT) score;
  • or the British Council IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5);
  • or satisfactory standard in the verbal section of the Princeton Test. Submitting a GMAT score will strongly support the application;
  • or equivalent tests from accredited language testing organizations;
  • or other evidence of proficiency in the English language which satisfies the Executive Board.

Students who successfully completed the M.Sc. in Trans-port and Maritime Management (MTMM) and who have fulfilled the admissions criteria for the M.Sc. in Transport Economics (MTME) will be waived for the 4 courses of module 1 as well as for the 3 courses listed under module 2.

Applicants who consider their knowledge of English to be insufficient, are therefore strongly advised to take English language courses, either in their home country before leaving, or during their stay in Antwerp. Throughout each academic year, the University of Antwerp organizes intensive English language courses for foreigners.
