The Erasmus Mundus Masters program in Clinical Linguistics (EMCL) is a 24 months full-time interdisciplinary university program at European level providing training for students in the fields of Neurolinguistics, Clinical Linguistics and Psycholinguistics.
The aim of the EMCL program is to train highly qualified advanced students from the whole world who are excellently prepared for research work and Phd programs in the field of Clinical Linguistics.
The EMCL program is jointly offered by a transnational consortium of three European universities with an integrated study program along with a required student mobility scheme between the participating institutions.
The transnational EMCL consortium comprises three participating European universities:
* Potsdam (Germany)
* Groningen (The Netherlands)
* Joensuu (University of Eastern Finland)
The three partners are known for their excellence in the fields of psycho-/neurolinguistics and clinical linguistics. They have initiated and run national programs which are highly demanded and well-evaluated by the national bodies.
Potsdam is the co-ordinating institution of the consortium and manages central aspects of the program.
The EMCL Masters (M.Sc.) program is a two year full time study program. The number of ECTS is 120. Students obtain a joint degree from the consortium. Language of instruction in all institutions of the consortium is English.
The EMCL program provides training in fields such as:
* - Methods and Statistics
* - Language Processing
* - Clinical and cross-linguistic Aphasiology
* - Developmental Language Disorders
* - Neuroimaging and Language
* - Neurological Rehabilitation
* - Language Therapy
The program is constructed from seven modules:
* M1: Propaedeutics (work-up classes, intensive rehabilitation classes)
* M2: Language and culture classes (Finnish, Dutch, German)
* M3: Methods (including statistics and experimental linguistics)
* M4: Psycho-/Neurolinguistics (including neuroimaging)

Propedeutics
In the first month, always starting on the 1st of September, propedeutic courses (5 ECTS) are held in Potsdam to overcome differences in academic knowledge at a very early stage of the program. Introductions are offered into Clinical Linguistics, Theoretical Linguistics and Methodology/Statistics.
Teaching semesters
Semester one (October-March, 25 ECTS) can be spent in either Groningen or Joensuu. Groningen has a focus on Clinical Aphasiology, Developmental Language Disorders and Developmental Dyslexia. Joensuu offers classes on Experimental Linguistics, Psycho-/Neurolinguistics and Language Development in Autism.
All students are together in Potsdam in the second semester (April-September, 30 ECTS). Classes will be on Neurological rehabilitation, Methods/Statistics, Language Development, Language Processing, Language Assessment and Topics in Neurolinguistics. Another focus is on Scientific Writing.
Mobility in the third semester (October-March, 30 ECTS)takes the students to Groningen or Joensuu. Classes will be similar to the first term but on an advanced level. A new focus is on Brain imaging and Language.
Thesis
The fourth semester (April-August, 30 ECTS)is spent on thesis work at the institution of the first supervisor.
Cultural and language courses
Apart from the scientific content of the program, cultural and language courses are an obligatory part in each teaching semester. Students are invited to learn the language of their host institution, get an idea of the cultural diversity in Europe and acquire skills in intercultural competence. Mobility scheme
