This course gives you the knowledge and skills you need to work in this exciting field. Because of the health improvement agenda and the demands of public health, in the UK and worldwide, health organisations, and other public, private and voluntary bodies, have difficult decisions to make.
The course responds to changing social circumstances, environments and policy priorities. Key aspects of the new public health skills and career development framework, supported by all four UK health departments and public health professional organisations, are reflected in the course content.
What can this course lead to?
You can make a career in public health and/or community development working for the health service, a local authority or the community sector. There are many opportunities in the public sector and in voluntary or private organisations to work on public health projects.
The postgraduate course in Public Health and Social Change is designed to meet the educational needs of this growing group of workers. It builds on established experience of health promotion education and adds a range of new knowledge and skills based on published surveys of professional needs.
The MSc has six taught modules - Health Improvement and Social Change, Evidence for Health Improvement, Global Issues and Health Improvement, Introduction to Research Methods, Participatory Health Needs Appraisal, and Collaborative Action for Health Improvement - and a Research Project and/or Dissertation.

Selection criteria
You will need to demonstrate an interest in public health / health promotion and social change.
Students must also confirm with the course leader that they have reliable access to essential IT equipment, software and internet services before commencing a distance learning programme of study. Students will need to demonstrate a level of ICT skills sufficient to enable them to access, navigate and contribute to online activities. Details of basic hardware and software requirements are available from the course leader.
