This programme has been designed to develop students’ ability to become Social Work practitioners who will practise critically to help individuals, families and groups by sharing insights into the following aspects of Social Work practice:
The need for Social Workers to practise in a disciplined way, and to take responsibility for their own professional development.
Social Work as a resource, and case management.
Social Work in a team context, both within the agency and across agency boundaries.
The use of research in influencing practice and organisational policy.
The ambiguities of welfare and the need for clarity (for example about the role of Social Work in surveillance and control).
The legal imperatives of Social Work.
The evidence base of Social Work Practice.
The need for Social Workers to be aware of social divisions and inequalities, and to incorporate this awareness into their practice.
An in-depth knowledge and understanding of an area of social work practice of their choice.
We produce graduates who have:
A critical awareness of the nature of social problems, and the location of individual despair and adversity in a social and policy context.
An enhanced understanding of the legal framework for Social Work in England and Wales.
Developed an appreciation of Social Work as practised in some other European and International contexts.
A shared understanding in respect of the integrity, knowledge and contribution of the range of settings in which Social Work is practised.
A critical appreciation of the role, integrity and contribution of other related professions.
A critical understanding and synthesis of reflection, theoretical concepts and personal enquiry relating to social work practice.
An enhanced appreciation of the factors that affect the life chances of people in a range of circumstances.
The ability to demonstrate the role of new research evidence to support and enhance new developments in social work practice.
A critical understanding and appreciation of the need to promote social justice and inclusion by the use of anti-discriminatory practice through an adherence to GSCC Code of Practice for Social Work.
A critical awareness of the scope an methodologies of social work research.
Contents
The MA/PG DIP Social Work were developed in partnership with a range of key stakeholders, including social work service users and carers, and representatives from social work agencies. This is an intensive programme of study that combines a level 7 academic award with a qualification in Social Work. It is studied over two years full time.
The course of study includes 200 days assessed practice placement and, as such, the timescale is very condensed. Classes will continue throughout the summer. For this reason, the course timetable is a bespoke timetable in that it does not conform to the normal academic degree timetable at the University. Students must make themselves aware of the timetable and dates they are required to attend lectures and attend placement as 100% attendance is required.
Students must pass all modules and practice placements must be passed in order to graduate as a qualified registered Social Worker.
Modules
Within this programme there are two pathways. Students can complete their Post Graduate Diploma in 18 months, following successful completion of 7 modules which include PGSW 7008 Qualificatory Social Work Practice. Students on this pathway will have achieved 120 academic credits. Students wishing to continue to complete MA Social Work will be required to complete an additional Dissertation Module (PGSW7007) to achieve 180 credits. The full MA takes 2 years.
Module PGSW 7006 - International Issues in Social Work Practice – is studied via a combination of workshop and e-learning. This type of learning is called blended learning, and it will enable the development of flexible study in order to encourage a deeper understanding of social work as a global profession through the enhancement of international links between students and staff.

The General Social Care Council stipulates that all students must have met Level 2 literacy and numeracy requirements – English and Maths GCSE grade C or equivalent – prior to entry to the course. Those students who do not have these qualifications upon entry may take either the University Equivalence test in Maths and English. Please also note: Adult Numeracy Key Skills Level 2 is also acceptable (available though Learn Direct or local Further Education Colleges). The Equivalence tests must be passed prior to entry. The academic requirements for entry to the programme apply equally to work-based students – those sponsored by secondment or traineeship schemes by their employer – as they do to students who apply independently. These requirements apply equally to students for whom English is a foreign language.
Standard entry requirements for all Social Work programmes are Maths and English at GCSE Grade C or equivalent (see above). In addition, for post graduate study, an honours degree, classification 2ii or above, or equivalent, from a recognised University or College, and have experience in, and understanding of, the Social Care environment.
