Location of Leibniz Universität Hannover

MSC HORT is an international Master of Science Programme in the field of horticulture at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. The programme is research oriented and exceptionally well positioned to respond to the needs of horticultural constituencies throughout the world. Fruits, vegetables, flowers and trees – improving their quality, yield, economic performance and their eco-friendly cultivation are the domain of horticultural scientists. We do research in various fields of plant biotechnology, crop production and horticultural value chains, from molecular plant breeding and plant architecture modeling to the economics of crop production and market research.

We look back on a long tradition in research and teaching, we have exceptional access to facilities and equipment and we hold a strong relationship with a wide variety of constituency groups including producers, consumers, associations, research and extension institutions and diverse horticulture industries in Germany, Europe and beyond.

Graduates from across the world are prepared to handle complex horticultural production systems and to be acquainted with the latest research methods as to take responsible positions e.g. in research, commerce and higher administration.

Contents

The M.Sc. programme in International Horticulture has been running since 1997 with the objective to provide an excellent, research-based training in Horticultural Science for highly talented students worldwide. Rather than deliver only facts and techniques, we educate our students to become critical and responsible people. During their research project, students learn to analyse and structure problems, to ask the right questions, acquire knowledge and organize complex tasks, and learn to communicate complex and abstract matters.

Course Length * Prescribed length of study: 4 semesters

Course Content The curriculum starts each year on October 1 and consists of courses and research work leading to a thesis.
Dependent on their research interests, students can specialize in one of twelve majors: Biostatistics, Floriculture, Fruit Science, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Horticultural Economics, Horticultural and Agricultural Engineering, Phytopathology and Entomology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Nutrition, Plant Physiology, Tree Nursery Science, Vegetable Science.
According to their major field, students are assigned to a major supervisor who guides the student in his research and course selection from the very beginning. The student is fully integrated in the major supervisor’s working group with access to office and research facilities. Planning of the research project starts in the first semester, and research proposals are presented in a colloquium in the fourth semester. In parallel to the research work students take courses, some are compulsory for all, others are taken according to specialisation and interest. A total of more than forty courses are available. In September of the second year, the final defence of the Master’s theses takes place with participation of international external examiners.
