The two-year programme offers stimulating, significant and innovative research at the internationally renowned Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science.
The Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science is a partner in the Lorentz Center, an international research centre for Astronomy, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Bio Sciences. The centre has extensive international contacts and maintains excellent relations with other Dutch university research groups, as well as with Dutch industry. The programme offers six different specialisations. Three tracks are dedicated to the specialisations of the Institute: Core Computer Technologies, Computer Science Theory and Advanced Technologies, and Bioinformatics. The other three tracks are research programmes combined with training in Science Communication, Education or Science-Based Business. By choosing one of these latter specialisations, specific career opportunities in science-related professions can be explored.
All tracks are intended for students with a recognized education in computer science on the Bachelor level. The Master of Science degree guarantees thorough research training founded on a profound theoretical basis. Master of Science students in Leiden work in a multinational environment and are being prepared to work in international settings.
Tracks
Track: Core Computer Technologies
The MSc programme Core computer Technologies is intended to provide students with a thorough computer science background that will allow them to pursue careers in research or industrial environments. The strength of the programme is its individual approach: for each student an individually tailored programme will be designed. This programme consists of courses, research and a Master's thesis project. The research directions are Computer Systems and Imagery & Media. Students with an MSc in Computer Science are admissible to a PhD programme.
Track: Computer Science Theory and Advanced Technologies
The MSc programme Computer Science Theory and Advanced Technologies is intended to provide students with a thorough computer science background that will allow them to pursue careers in research or industrial environments. The strength of the programme is its individual approach: for each student an individually tailored programme will be designed. This programme consists of courses, research and a Master's thesis project. The research directions are Algorithms and foundations of Software technology. Students with an MSc in Computer Science are admissible to a PhD programme.
Track: Bioinformatics
The programme consists of a core programme with subjects such as data analysis, pattern recognition, databases and data mining, microscopy, modelling and visualisation. The programme also comprises specialization courses where students can choose from seven different courses and minor courses with choice of courses in Life Science, Computer Science and Mathematics. Finally, students do a research project and a Master´s thesis project.
Track: Computer Science and Science-Based Business
The Computer Science component of the programme consists of a research project in one of the research groups of the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science, including a Master´s thesis and an oral presentation, and courses to be selected in correspondence with the research topic. The choice for the courses and research project will be made in consultation with a supervisor.
The business related part of the programme consists of the following components:
In order to get a Science-Based Business Master annotation, a minimal programme consisting of the course Science-Based Business Fundamentals and the Science-Based Business Internship must be completed (40 EC). The course Science-Based Business Fundamentals can also be taken in the specialisation part of the Master tracks Core Computer Technologies and Computer Science Theory and Advanced Technologies. More information on Science Based Business is available at wwww.sbb.leidenuniv.nl
Track: Computer Science and Communication
The master's track in Communication offers students the opportunity to combine previous research training with programmes in different aspects of science communication, such as journalism, new media, museology and information visualisation.
The track consists of two parts: the first master's year (60 EC) is given in English and focuses on the field of natural sciences which the student is following/in which the student is majoring. In the second master's year (60 EC; minimum 40 EC) the student follows the Dutch-language communication element.Students of this master's programme have an excellent opportunity to broaden their studies outside their own specialist field, and during the work placement are able to try out the interesting opportunities offered by a career as scientific communicator or scientific journalist.
The experiences and insights gained will be of benefit to those who intend to continue in an academic environment, for example as a PhD candidate in their own specialist field. The ability to communicate about science is an essential skill which all scientists should have mastered!
Track: Computer Science and Education
The computer science component in the programme (60 EC, taught in English) consists of a research project in one of the research groups of the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science, including a Master´s thesis and an oral presentation. The choice of the course work and the research project will be made in consultation with an adviser. The education part of the programme (60 EC) is taught in Dutch.
It is offered by the Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON), and consists of the following components:
For students attending the Education track it is strongly recommended that the BSc programme has included the 10-EC-course Learning, Presentation and Communication, offered by the Leiden Graduate School of Education (ICLON), or an equivalent course.
This programme has a workload of 120 ECTS.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
