The Psychology Master's (MSc) degree course trains scientists and professionals to solve problems on the basis of scientific psychological evidence.

Problems related to industry and organizations, government and policy, health and safety, media and technology as well as education in a knowledge society frequently require solutions based on psychology. The application of technology in organizations may be important, but knowing how to work with technology is even more important. Health problems cannot be solved by medical treatment alone: psychological intervention is often more effective. Schools and other educational institutions mainly focus on learning and knowledge so psychology can contribute by offering insights for improvement. The Master of Science in Psychology (MSc) programme trains scientists and professionals to apply psychological theories, which are based on scientific evidence and could be applied to analyze psychological problems and design, implement and evaluate psychological solutions. Within this master programme students can choose one track out of five major fields of Applied Psychology: Human Factors and Media Psychologya; Learning Sciences; Conflict, Risk and Safety; Mental Health Promotion as well as Health Psychology.

Specialities:

Human Factors and Mediapsychology:

How do we process information, how do we recognize relevant information, what is the role of attention and memory, and how do we accomplish tasks based on this information? And what are the consequences of this if we want to design messages for technical devices? Some research domains of the cognitive psychology and their methods (like EEG) are used to help develop (technical) products that are easily understood by humans.

Learning Sciences:

Is it possible to learn about physics in a virtual laboratory? Can you learn through online gaming? What is the role of brain development during learning? These and other questions are addressed in the specialization Learning Sciences. This field of research has a multidisciplinary nature in which cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neurological psychology, educational science and computer science are included. With this masterâs specialization you can work for example as an educational researcher for the government, as an educational designer for specialised training institutions like the Police Academy, or as an educational advisor for primary and secondary education organizations.

Mental Health Promotion:

Indications are increasing that mental health is more than absence of mental disorder. Positive mental health also includes our subjective, psychological and social wellbeing. Simply said, it is important that we feel good, experience opportunities to thrive, and that we feel connected with society. In a society that is changing extremely fast, our positive mental health determines the amount of change we can cope with. Beside the treatment of mental illnesses, healthcare is also increasingly focusing on the promotion of positive mental health. In this masterâs specialization track attention will be paid to treatment of mental illnesses, mental problems associated with physical diseases, and stimulating positive mental health. You will learn about psychopathology and clinical health psychology, and you will practice therapeutic skills like behavioural therapy. Also insights will be obtained into positive psychology and you will become familiar with the associated interventions.

Conflict, Risk and Safety:

How do people react to risk issues? This is one of the main central questions this master specialization is dealing with. Furthermore you will look at different social problems and conflict situations as for example kidnapping. Physical and mental questions of safety and risk play an important role, too. How to improve road fafety? How to cope with climate change? How do we cope with epidemics as for example swine flue? You learn how to analyze these topics in order to get answers, which will hopefully help you to set up effective interventions.

Health Psychology:

How to protect children from binge drinking? Could computer games help children with diabetes to manage their illness in a proper way? What for (psychological) problems encounter family members if a family member is suffering from cancer. Health psychology looks at the interaction between the mind and the body while especially trying to protect people against serious illnesses. If you are following this specialization your will not help people on a face-to-face basis but your focus group will be the broader public.
