The one-year programme aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of political issues, studies from the perspective of one of five specialisations.
In this programme, you will obtain knowledge of the latest developments and research in political science. Its aim is to prepare you for further academic research and/or the labour market. As an intended bridge to professional careers, the programme provides firstly, theoretical and empirical knowledge, and secondly, analytical and methodological skills. This combination leads to the capacity to learn, reflect, investigate and innovate in order to deal with the complex challenges that exist in various sectors of the labour market. A combination of seminars and the thesis work will provide you with a strong critical grounding in the core issues of both political science and politics. This will ensure a capacity to actively engage in explanations and evaluations of political phenomena. You will be able to choose a specialisation from a wide range of research topics, including Dutch Politics, International Relations, Comparative Politics and Democracy, Political Behaviour and Communication and Political Philosophy.
Most classes are taught in a seminar format, in which participants are required to prepare for and attend all class meetings. Because the Master´s programme involves classroom work as well as individual research, there is close consultation between students and staff.
The Department strives to present a programme of graduate study that meets the needs and interests of each student. Working with the MA advisor, a programme of study can be developed with individual goals in mind. Students can choose to emphasise a particular area, such as political philosophy, empirical political science, comparative politics, or international relations.
The programme consists of the following components:
At the end of this programme, graduates are expected to have a strong critical grounding in the core issues relevant to political science. Because of the comprehensive knowledge and critical insight in their field of study, graduates are able to formulate key questions in political science and to discover whether the current body of knowledge provides answers to these questions. They are capable of actively producing knowledge, rather than simply consuming it.
