Coastal regions are among the most densely populated areas on earth. They are strongly affected by a number of atmospheric, marine and terrestrial processes which mankind has influenced for generations. An understanding of how these natural physical, biological, and chemical processes interact with each other, of their impact on these regions and how they react to human intervention is vital. Moreover, economic activities, societal needs, tourism, environmental problems as well as the use of resources from coastal environments make the comprehensive management of these regions increasingly important.
To meet the worldwide challenges of effectively handling problems in coastal environments there is a tremendous need for highly skilled personnel. The postgraduate programs in coastal geosciences and engineering at the University of Kiel have been developed for the purpose of training and equipping young scientists with the tools necessary to dealing with these challenges. It is intended to provide students with basic academic coursework as well as a thorough understanding of the concepts and practical training essential for managing modern-day coastal zone problems. The university with its marine and coastal research centres on the Baltic Sea and North Sea coastal areas, makes it an ideal base from which to conduct studies on the interaction between coastal processes and human activities on both bodies of water.
The M.Sc. and Doctorate programs are offered entirely in English. The programs are suitable to students with different background such as civil engineering, geosciences and oceanography. The aims of Corelab are to develop long-term expertise and to promote international collaboration in the scientific study and management of coastal areas.
High class postgraduate education in coastal geosciences and engineering including experience in practical, analytical and numerical modelling is provided. Practical methods consist of carrying out experiments in the laboratory and in the field. The latter combined with numerical model simulation is one of the strong points of the course. Theoretical aspects of the course deals with the coastal processes such as waves, currents etc and the coastal behaviour through sediment transport mechanics. On the numerical side the students work with a comprehensive computer software to appreciate the various factors affecting the flow and the sediment transport. The distinguishing feature of this course is the link between coastal geosciences and engineering. Coastal management is given the right emphasis. They focus on engineering and geological viewpoints which provide qualitative and quantitative approaches to coastal zone problems. Research involving experimental work and/or numerical study leading to a dissertation is an important part of the program.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testAdmission requirements for German students are a "Vordiplom" examination and two additional subject-related semesters in the field of geosciences, engineering and oceanography. International students require a Bachelor or Science degree (or equivalent) in the field of geosciences, oceanography or engineering. Proof of proficiency in English or equivalent) is also required for both German and international students. Directly related professional experience in the field is advantageous. A solid background in mathematics at the undergraduate level is required.
The complete documentation of your application includes:
* application form, please write clearly or fill in and print out the downloaded form
* application to the students residence (optional), but strongly recommended
* documentation of proficiency in English (see below, 3.3)
* a clear statement of purpose (letter of motivation)
* a short CV that gives the essentials
* two letters of recommendation (add sealed letters to your application)
* Transcript of your high school leaving exam
* Transcript of your B.Sc. exam or equivalent (Germany: Vordiplom + 2 Fachsemester)
* Other documents on professional experiences, research or IT-Skills etc. (optional)
English language requirements
Since instruction and examinations are given in English, it is essential that participants have a good working knowledge of the English language. Candidates are required to take one of the following internationally recognized tests before admission can be confirmed:
* TOEFL test > 550 score paper based or > 213 score computer based
* Cambridge Proficiency Certificate
* Oxford Higher Certificate
* International Certificate Conference ICC Stage 3 (Technical)
* IELTS Band 6,5 or higher
