Management and Economics of Innovation is a unique and highly international master’s programme that trains students to understand, analyse and skilfully manage innovation processes in companies and other areas of society.
The programme focuses on how and why companies innovate to compete and how these actions change competitive conditions, what managers, policy makers and other decision makers can do and finally how companies can reap financial returns from their investments in innovation. The programme combines an advanced level of business management and economics with engineering knowledge.
Who should apply
After completing the MEI programme, the student will have a thorough scholarly understanding of the field as well as hands-on experience in handling problems and opportunities related to technological and business innovation. The programme trains students by combining extensive practical training – often project-based industry challenges – with critical analysis, which helps them put theories and methods to effective use.
Why apply
After completing the MEI programme, graduates should be able to:
* Analyse how innovations and technical and scientific knowledge interact with economic forces.
* Identify, formulate and solve problems related to innovation and renewal activities.
* Cope with and execute strategies for innovation by applying state-of-the-art management skills.
* Lead, interact and communicate with stakeholders both inside and outside the innovative organisation.
Career
Career opportunities include positions at both large multinational and small technology-based firms. Examples of occupations include management consulting, technology/industry analysis, project management, product development, R&D management, business development, corporate venturing, hi-tech entrepreneurship and venture capital investment.
Interesting job opportunities also exist at policy-making government agencies and institutions that commercialise science and technology. Undergraduate students with a major in industrial engineering and management or in another engineering discipline are eligible to apply.
The research underlying the MEI programme is closely linked to current business practice and problems. Therefore, both teachers and students have extensive contact with industry. This is demonstrated, for example, through guest lectures, joint research projects, master’s theses and applied projects dealing with current business issues.
The faculty is also frequently involved in executive education. Several of the MEI programme’s professors conduct research at CBI, Center for Business Innovation, at Chalmers. CBI is major research centre in the field of management of innovation.
