Location of University of Bern

The Master in Classics at the University of Bern has the following goals: to broaden students’ familiarity with Greek and Latin literature, to enhance their language skills, and to enable them to engage in their own research. The first two of these aims are pursued through a number of required and freely chosen classes, the third through the writing of a master thesis. Typically, students will choose one of the ancient languages as their major and the other as their minor, but combinations of a major or minor in classics with degrees in other disciplines are also possible. In any combination of major and minor, students at the Classics Department are encouraged to profit from the interdisciplinary ethos of the humanities at Bern by taking classes in other disciplines as well. The Department offers conditions which allow students to receive close consultation and feedback on their work. Classics at Bern offers an environment that is both intellectually stimulating and friendly. The Department emphasises rigour in language training and promotes an open conception of the subject which allows students to engage with a variety of authors and topics. In this spirit, the Classics Department aspires to create a space in which each student can define his or her own approach to classical literature while always being able to draw on the advice and expertise of other members of the Institute.
