Latin American Studies (LAS) aims at a profound understanding of Latin American history, literature, cultures and societies. LAS is an interdisciplinary and transcultural area studies programme focusing on Latin America from the European conquest till this day. Cultural forms and practices, including those of indigenous populations, Afro-Americans, European and Asian immigrants as well as today's hybrid and multi-cultural Latin American societies are analysed from a historical and comparative perspective. The programme combines disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching. Students can follow broader issues or focus on special topics and disciplines. The programme includes different types of courses such as lectures, seminars, training in methodology and theory, colloquia to conceptualise research projects, and language courses. The graduates obtain disciplinary expertise in history, literature, social anthropology and musicology and, beyond that, proficiency in a variety of fields, such as development, education, and the media, in which detailed knowledge of Latin American societies and intercultural skills are required. Cultural institutions, governmental and non-governmental organisations, international corporations, and the tourist sector need specialists on Latin America. In addition, graduates meet the requirements for doctoral programmes e.g. in Latin American studies or history, Latin American studies/Hispanic literature, musicology and social and cultural anthropology. Students may apply for study abroad programmes in Latin America. Language skills in German, Spanish and another foreign language (preferably English) are required. Students with a BA degree in history, Latin American studies/Hispanic literature, social and cultural anthropology or musicology are invited to apply without further preconditions. BA students of other fields may contact the director of the Centre for Global Studies to learn whether they match the programme profile and whether supplementary achievements are required.
