The Linguistics Department holds a professorship in general linguistics, a professorship in historical linguistics, as well as two temporary professor positions in psycholinguistics and typological linguistics. For the main part, our faculty focuses on multilingualism, socio- and psycholinguistics and typology in the field of general linguistics, as well as grammatical descriptions of Tibetan dialects, Caucasian languages, and language change in the framework of historical linguistics. Students with a genuine interest in the structure and applications of language are therefore able to choose from a wide range of linguistic topics. In the 2-year MA Linguistics programme, students can deepen their knowledge in either general or historical linguistics by selecting three theoretical and three empirical fields of interest. These core areas are complemented with freely selectable courses, thus underlining the breadth of the linguistic training students obtain at our Department. Doctoral programmes are currently being developed. The linguistics training enables students to work analytically and thoroughly, not only in terms of linguistic analysis but in profession-related and everyday tasks too. Such skills are valuable in a wide range of professions, whether teaching a foreign language, working in linguistics-related research in the industry, or working in forensic document analysis.
