From its foundation in 1921 by Ernst Kurth, the Institute of Musicology has maintained an independent profile and exerted an influence on teaching and research in musicology. Since the directorship of Stefan Kunze, the main research focus has been on opera. This is reflected in the library's collection which contains around 30'000 titles, especially in the systematically compiled collection of rare vocal scores of operas of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the library, students have access to the Institute's collection of around 6'000 records and CDs. The Institute features a friendly atmosphere, with about 80 students and 16 staff members, where it is possible to look after all students from abroad, and which ensures newcomers to become rapidly introduced and integrated.
