The purpose of the programme is to provide an engineering education within the materials field where emphasis is on synthesis, chemical characterisation, physical and chemical properties and applications. There is also a close connection to industrially relevant materials, including both present products and materials for the future.
The programme allows the student to choose among courses that focus on different types of materials, materials chemistry and nanotechnology. In most courses there is also a strong connection to industrial applications on regional, national or international level.

Who should apply
The programme is intended for students aiming at a career in the area of materials science, which is a very broad field both scientifically and technologically. Scientists who work in industry or at universities and engineers who work in materials science are active in fields ranging from fundamental materials development to application of materials technology to products and processes.

Students receive an attractive professional education where several courses are project based and include project work closely related to research or industry.

Why apply
There is a basic demand for materials engineers who have a sound background in chemistry. Relevant areas include, for example, automotive, rolling bearings, bioimplants, polymers, surface treatment, paint, packaging materials, hygiene and health care products and pharmaceuticals.

In addition, sustainable engineering opens up other opportunities in areas such as catalysis, recycling, biodegradable materials, tailored nanomaterials and corrosion resistant alloys. Swedish researchers perform cutting edge research within characterisation, design and development of new materials. There is thus a continuous need for graduate students who have a solid background in materials science.

Contents

The complete programme is 120 credit units (HEC) of which 30 HEC are a M.Sc. thesis and the remaining 90 HEC is covered by courses.

The programme builds of 9 alternative-obligatory courses of which a minimum of 6 must be selected. The program also offers 3 elective courses that can be supplemented by other advanced courses that are offered by other Masters programmes at Chalmers.

The purpose of offering a choice of courses in each quarter is to give flexibility for the individual student to compose a personal competence profile. It can be a particular topic that the students are somewhat weak in, or may want to specialize in. The courses can be combined in different ways. Students are, however, encouraged to follow one of the proposed specializations (tracks).
