Environmental issues and their social and economic implications are at the top of every political agenda. Quantifying how much the environment contributes to the burden of cancer, asthma, lung and heart disease opens a new field and demands a new approach and a new breed of scientist.
Designed to equip you with the scientific expertise to assess risk and influence both policy and decision making, the Health and the Environment MSc promotes the development of holistic integrated strategies to tackle emerging environment and health issues.
This course represents a unique offering within the UK and Europe, differentiating itself from established ‘environmental health’ courses by focusing at a guidance level on important fields including chemical regulation and policy, risk assessment and perception, and health impact assessment.
The Health and the Environment MSc programme is developed with input from the Institute of Environmental Health (IEH) and Cranfield University uses its close links with industry to ensure the relevance of the course content which comprises of a formal taught ten-module course, an integrating component and a four-month research project and thesis. Typical projects include examining air pollution, environmentally-associated cancers and newly emerging infectious chemical and biological agents such as SARS and avian flu.
This course is suitable for both recent graduates and scientists who are looking to gain an advanced understanding of how human activities which are detrimental to the environment specifically affect human health. It will prepare you for a career in the buoyant environment and health sector or, alternatively, provide a route into higher-level research.
Student testimonial
Charlotte Michonneau, Health and the Environment MSc
"I choose the MSc in Health and the Environment as it was closely linked to my degree in Engineering at my school Polytech Grenoble in France. I have always wanted to be more specialised in the environment and the MSc provided more specialist learning in the area of risk in relation to environment and health.
I studied the degree as part of the double degree programme – this enabled me to obtain an engineering degree from a French school and an MSc from a British university at the same time.
I was attracted to Cranfield because of the cultural melting pot it presents. I have met a lot of students from all around the world who will stay good friends. Studying in the UK has enabled me to improve my written and spoken English and is a great advantage if you’re planning to work in a foreign country after graduation.
The course lectures were of quality and the course director was always available to help students. The lecturers were really specialised in their fields and the library staff were helpful and always available.
The most enjoyable part of the course was my research project that I did in Australia in a Risk Management & Environment consulting company in Sydney. This provided a great opportunity to fulfil the requirements of both institutions and helped me to realise my goals and dreams at the same time.
I also enjoyed the structure of the course – the balance between lectures and assignment weeks and the autonomy that was given to us to organise our own work schedule. All the different sports offered at Cranfield were also great.
My time at Cranfield was an interesting and rewarding experience – academically, culturally and socially."
The course is divided into three parts:
