The MA enables you to practise as an Art Therapist with adults or children in the National Health Service, Social Services and Educational establishments, and to become a practitioner registered with the British Association of Art Therapists and to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC).
Your study will involve:
-Practical experience of Art Psychotherapy practice in a clinical placement for 120 days. This is supervised in College and on placement.
-Experiential work including art practice and small and large Art Psychotherapy groups.
-Theoretical studies that draw on Art Therapy theory, art theory, psychotherapy and
psychoanalysis, group theory, systems theory, and organisational dynamics.
By the end of the programme you will be able to:
-Demonstrate the multiplicity of skills necessary to the clinical practice of Art Psychotherapy that ensures safe and independent practice with any client population.
-Show an understanding of the theories that inform Art Psychotherapy practice, demonstrate professional conduct and convey a knowledge of the cultural, social, political and historical context of the profession.
Modes of study
The MA in Art Psychotherapy qualifies you to practise and enables you to apply to be a Registered Arts Therapist. Students who are awarded the MA can register as Art Therapists without any further study or supervision. You can study the MA in two modes; full-time for 2 years or part-time for 3 years. You should state clearly which mode you wish to apply for on the application form.
The part-time programme allows you to continue with some paid work. However, this paid work cannot be used as a training placement. Placements will be arranged for part-time students in the same way as they are for full-time students.
We regret the programme is not available by module-based study and correspondence study or distance learning because a large proportion of the programme is based upon experiential learning in groups. However, if you are living outside London, it may be possible to arrange the clinical placement part of the programme in other areas, if local supervision is available.
Contents
What you study
The programme is divided into two parts. Part One gives you the cognitive, experiential and practical understanding of the theory and practice of Art Psychotherapy. Part Two enables you to develop your theoretical understanding and clinical practice and enhances your awareness of Evidence-Based Practice and research, leading to the award of the MA.
The MA is based on an experiential model in which you are expected to take responsibility for your learning, development and assessment in collaboration with tutors. It is mainly taught in groups so that you learn about the relationship of theory to clinical practice, interpersonal relationships and the therapeutic role of visual art-making from a live experience. The programme has three aspects: coursework,which includes lectures, seminars, experiential Art Psychotherapy groups, supervision and tutorials; clinical placement; and two assessed pieces of written work.
Assessment: Coursework, placement portfolios, mid-course case study, final clinical report. Please note: in common with most psychotherapy trainings and in accordance with the requirements of the British Association of Art Therapists and the Health Professions Council (HPC), you are required to be in personal therapy throughout the programme up to the award of the MA in Art Psychotherapy.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

You need an undergraduate degree of at least second class standard in visual arts, or a degree in an allied area, or a professional qualification (such as RMN, CQSW) and a portfolio of your own art work. You also need at least a year´s full-time equivalent experience of work in the health or social services or in education (equivalent to at least 1,600 hours) - please provide details with your application form. You also need some experience of personal therapy.
