As an MSc student in Biology-biotechnology, you will work with biotechnological problems across traditional boundaries. Biotechnology is an international research area and an MSc in biotechnology will enable you to work with research laboratories all over the world. The programme also provides you with a background for participating in and understanding the viewpoints in the biotechnological debate.
Some of the questions you will work with are :
Your professional profile is built through your selection of optional subjects. You can choose to specialise within a single organism (animals, plants or microbes) or methods such as bioinformaticsm nanobiotechnology or bioprocess technology, or within a particular subject area such as pharmacology and toxicology, enzymology or genome and cell biology.
The thesis gives you the chance to address a scientific issue within your particular field of interest. You have one year to complete your thesis, which can consist of both laboratory work and text analyses. Theses are often done in relation to your supervisor's research projects, but you can also collaborate with research enterprises or industry.
With an MSc in Biology-Biotechnology, many opportunities will be open to you. Your work assignments can range from studying and optimising the use of plant cells, animal cells or micro-organisms for manufacturing foodstuffs, drugs, textiles, new energy resources or environmentally beneficial processes in relevant companies. Another option is employment in public institutions where you will be involved in research, management, risk assessment, teaching or communication.
There are also good opportunities for continuing your research. Particularly within the field of biotechnological research, the Faculty of Life Sciences is recognised internationally for its high academic level. This is especially true at the molecular level within foodstuffs, plants and animals.
The MSc programme is a 2-year programme equivalent to 120 ECTS credits. In order to prepare you for the international labour market, the MSc programme is taught in English. This means that lectures are in English, as are your reports and exams.
The programme is set at 120 credits, equivalent to two full years of study and must include the following elements:
