Food, quality and safety are much debated in our society. The advances that have taken place in recent decades within technology and biological science have created completely new ways of producing and processing foods. Increasing technologicalisation has made food production extremely complex, and there is a growing need for highly qualified graduates who can grasp and apply the new technologies.
When studying food science, some of the issues you will work with are:
The food industry is one of Denmark´s most important sectors, and many opportunities exist for food science graduates. Some work in n food companies with product development, quality management and company management. Or graduates are involved with the development of new and healthy foods or working to prevent undesirable bacteria from entering the products.
As the programme is taught in English and the food industry is globally oriented, the course gives you a solid foundation for an international career.
The MSc programme is a 2-year programme equivalent to 120 ECTS credits. The programme is taught in English.
You can choose between several specialitiations, for example meat, dairy, biotechnology, product development, food safety, or food in general. All specialisations have both compulsory courses and optional subjects. You end the course with a thesis which is often based on a specific problem in a food company or in a research project.
The programme is offered in collaboration between the Faculty of Life Sciences and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and some of the specialisations take place at DTU. It is also possible to pursue elective courses at DTU.
Structure of the programme
The programme consists of compulsory and elective courses and a thesis. The courses you follow vary according to which specialisation you choose. The following specialisations are available:
Additionally, you can choose between three three joint MSc programmes offered in collaboration with international partner universities:
Thesis
You will conclude your master´s degree programme with a thesis, which is a substantial written work equivalent to six or nine months of teaching. You can write the thesis alone or in a group. The thesis is often based on a specific problem in a food company or on a research assignment.
Examples of theses include Fast method for determination of Salmonella, New method for determination of the fat content in full cream milk powder, What is good eating quality in pork and how do users perceive it? and Addition of antioxidants to packaging.
Study abroad and practical training
Both the Faculty of Life Sciences and DTU work in close collaboration with production companies and research institutions. Both educational institutions also collaborate with many foreign universities.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
