The global demand for forest and nature resources and the pressures on the natural environment seem to continue to increase. The need to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations has never been greater.
We propose an integrated two-year world-class Masters Course in Sustainable Forest and Nature Management (SUFONAMA). The overall objective is to provide a top-level programme that qualifies graduates to deal with the huge challenges in Europe´s pursuit of an evermore sustainable management of her natural resources, namely, that the management of forests and nature areas must be seen in an integrated landscape context.
To obtain the SUFONAMA double degree and the Diploma Supplement, students have to acquire 120 ECTS credits by studying at two Consortium institutions, acquiring at least 60 ECTS credits at each. All SUFONAMA modular activities are completed in English. Due to the one-year Course components, SUFONAMA encourages its student body to engange in local language studies available at all the partner institutions. The total students population is expected to be 150.
The Master Course is organized by a Consortium which involves five institutions:
The overall objective of the SUFONAMA Course is to provide top-level and up-to-date education that makes the graduates qualified for coping with the huge challenges in contemporary forest and nature management in countries where the forest-nature paradigm has shifted in recent years. This is achieved through the first year of studies imparting to the students a broad knowledge of the new paradigm in forest and nature management and in the second year giving the opportunity to specialise in one of five well-defined fields in which a research-based thesis is written.
Specialisations include:
Additionally the specialisation includes a master thesis based on research and fieldwork inside or outside the EU.
The SUFONAMA Course consists of a first year at one of three institutions (Bangor, Copenhagen, Goettingen) and a second year at one of the four other institutions.
The building stones are existing masters programmes as well as research and network services. The aim of the first study year is to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable forest and nature management. There is thus only one common first year programme specification - the learning outcomes are similar for the three first year institutions and will allow students to choose freely among the five specialisation options in the second year:
All parts of the SUFONAMA Course are described using the SUFONAMA standards developed by the Consortium:
There is only one common set of admission criteria, only one common application procedure, and only one joint student selection process. The main selection criteria are: a good first university degree; the applicant's CV; documentation of proficiency in English; the applicant's personal statement of motivation; recommendations from two references, of which at least one academic. The SUFONAMA Course thus offers a truly integrated study programme that is already fully recognised in all the participating countries.
The following degrees are awarded:
MSc in Forestry in Copenhagen, MSc in Environmental Forestry (year 1) and MSc in Conservation and Land Management (year 2) in Bangor, MSc in Forestry in Goettingen, MSc in Forestry in Alnarp, and MSc in Forestry and Environmental Sciences in Padova.
After the selection of applicants to the Course, the students study for the first year at one of three partner institutions: University of Bangor, University of Copenhagen or University of Goettingen. There is thus only one common first year programme specification - at all three first year institutions, the learning outcomes will allow students to choose freely among the five specialisation options in the second year.
The first study year ends with a Joint Summer Module, run in one of the consortium countries. This module is a compulsory component of the SUFONAMA Masters Course. All first year students at all three first year institutions must attend the course to meet their fellow students and staff from ALL members of the consortium. This will facilitate networking; reinforce the membership of a SUFONAMA Alumni Association; assist students in making their choice of Year 2 destination and specialisation; and to plan and develop thesis topics.
The second year studies (specialisation) takes place at one of the five partner institutions, but not at that of the first study year. Each specialisation is based on the partner universities´ research strengths. The areas of specialisation are: conservation and land management (Bangor), economic management of forest and nature (Copenhagen), timber and non-timber forest product use and processing (Goettingen), Scandinavian and East European forestry (Alnarp), and mountain forestry and watershed management (Padova).
Thesis work is identical at all five partner universities: 30 ECTS, external examiner.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationThe SUFONAMA Commission will select scholars based on an assessment of (i) their academic credentials and (ii) the benefit to SUFONAMA programme implementation. These selection criteria are equally weighted. Secondary selection criteria are potential partnerships with the home institutions of the scholar and geographical considerations.
