Location of University of Copenhagen

Europe has a long history of intensive use of its natural resources and lessons on misuse and overuse of land and water resources have been experienced and learned the hard way. This has forced Europeans to pay strong attention to environmental deterioration and ecosystem vulnerability. Europe is therefore at the cutting edge with respect to environmental research, its use in monitoring, control, legislation, policy and management actions, and development of environmental technology.

The EnvEuro Master programme in Environmental Science with focus on soil, water and biodiversity, is a two-year study programme developed by the following universities:

  1. University of Copenhagen (Denmark),
  2. University of Hohenheim (Germany),
  3. Swedish University of Agricultural Science (Sweden)
  4. and the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Science Vienna (Austria), all members of the Euroleague for Life Sciences.

The ENVEURO programme focuses on the relationships between natural resource uses in Europe and their effects on environment and health, and aims at providing analytical and management tools as well as environmental technologies for sustainable production systems in areas with high pressures on natural resources. Water resources takes a central role in the program as water quantities and quality is a powerful measure of pollutional loads and effect as well as mass and energy balances in agriculture, industries and households.

The Master programme aims at providing candidates who can work professionally with problem identification, characterisation and solving related to the use of natural resources, and based on insight in European ecosystems and principles used in current European environmental management.

Students completing the Master in Environmental Science will be awarded a full Master degree in Environmental Science from two of these universities.

EnvEuro is a two-year Master in Environmental Science, offered by four leading European universities.

The Master is focused on soil, water and biodiversity.

It features an introduction to environmental science, six different specialisations, and finally a Masters thesis in environmental science.

Contents

The aim of the Basic semester is to bring students to a common level of knowledge, introduce the main concepts in Environmental Science, and establish a solid foundation for the specialisations in the Advanced Semester Packages. You will follow the Basic Semester Package (BSP) at your chosen Home university.

The BSP comprises:

  • - EnvEuro Intro course
  • - 15 ECTS compulsory E-learning course Environmental Management in Europe (EME)
  • - 15 ECTS compulsory and elective courses

EnvEuro Intro course

The programme starts with a one-week Intro course where all students starting the Master programme will meet in Copenhagen. The course introduces the EnvEuro Master programme, students and teachers will get to know each other, the EME course will begin and there will be excursions.

Environmental Management in Europe (EME)

The 15 ECTS EME course starts with an intensive introduction to E-learning and Environmental Management during the EnvEuro Intro course, and continues as an E-learning course for the rest of the first semester.

Compulsory and elective courses

The other 15 ECTS of the BSP are devoted to compulsory and elective courses in the Basic Semester Package (BSP) at your chosen Home university.

Specialisations

The EnvEuro Master programme features six different specialisations in Environmental Science. Each of the specialisations include two pre-designed Advanced Semester Packages (ASP-1 and ASP-2) composed of compulsory and elective courses.

At the end of the first semester you must choose your specialisation and a university that offers the specialisation. This university will be your Host university. In the second semester you will start the specialisation at your Home university with the first Advanced Semester Package (ASP-1). In the third semester you will go to your Host university and continue the specialisation or change to another specialisation with the second Advanced Semester Package (ASP-2).

Specialisation
  • Water Resources
  • Environmental Impacts
  • Soil Resources and Land Use
  • Ecosystems and Biodiversity
  • Environmental Management
  • Climate Change

Masters Thesis

The thesis work has an extent of 30 ECTS.

You perform your thesis work during the fourth semester while enrolled at your host university. There will be a supervisor from both your host and your home university. In most cases you will be physically located at the host university during the entire thesis work, but if you and your supervisors agree you can choose to do part of the thesis work at your home university. A third party such as a public or private research organisation, or an industry may also be involved in the thesis work

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
