The MA in Asian Studies (CKE81) is a one-year full-time programme.

The MA Asian Studies is a sister programme of the MA in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business and offers graduates from the arts, humanities, social sciences, business, science and engineering an understanding of Asian societies including culture, education, social systems, politics, business and management; to develop linguistic and intercultural skills necessary to work in or relate to Asia and Asian countries; and to gain experience in living and working in Asian countries.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:
* To cater for the growing interest in and awareness of Asia in Ireland by providing language and academic study in a range of Asia-related fields.
* To equip students to pursue further studies and/or work in Asia or Asia-related fields.

Duration: 1 year full-time including 20 weeks in Asia


Contents

Programme Structure

Part I (September-December)
In Part I students will have intensive language training, and classes on research methods and training, orientalism, international history of East Asia, business in East Asia, and East Asian states, markets and social systems.

Some of these classes will be taught in the form of workshops. By the end of Part I, students will develop an individual research interest in close co-operation with their supervisors.

Part II (January – June)
For Part II, students will go to our Asian partner institutions to further pursue their language, culture and business education in the country of their main interest. They will conduct research for their dissertations in close co-operation with their supervisors at UCC and with the support from staff from our partner universities.

Part III (July to September)
Students will return to UCC for Part III to finalize their research dissertations and present their findings at the final workshop, which will be assessed by their UCC supervisors. The workshop will include an extensive evaluation of the students’ experiences in Asia as well as the MA programme and might be attended by external experts and/or facilitators.

Programme Requirements
Students take 90 credits as follows: Part I (35 credits) AS 6001 Intensive Language Course Japanese/Korean 10 credits

* AS 6002 Research Methods and Training 5 credits

* AS 6003 Orientalism 5 credits

* AS 6004 International History of East Asia 5 credits

* AS 6005 Business in East Asia 5 credits

* AS 6006 The East Asian Models – States, Markets and Social Systems 5 credits

Part II (30 credits)
* AS 6200 Study in Asia 30 credits

6 months of intensive language and cultural studies at partner universities in Japan/Korea/India/Malaysia

Part III (25 credits)
* AS 6010 Dissertation 20 credits

* AS 6011 Final Workshop 5 credits

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s honours degree with at least Second Class honours, Grade II, or an equivalent academic or professional qualification in one of the following areas: Arts, Humanities, Social Science, History, Business, Science, or Engineering.

The Additional/Supplementary Statement Questions MUST also be completed during the online application process

Applicants may be required to attend an interview prior to selection.
