This MBS is designed for graduates who have taken no, or a very limited amount of management or marketing in their undergraduate degree. They may wish to pursue a career in management or marketing, or to focus on a specific strategic innovation, enterprise or marketing capability. Entrants to this programme come from a variety of academic backgrounds, including science, arts, engineering, law and social science. It is also suitable for those with professional or academic qualifications like medicine or accounting. This unique programme places great emphasis on the creative and innovation aspects of management and marketing which are essential for business careers and for the development of a knowledge economy.
The MBS (Management & Marketing) is a twelve month full-time programme which is delivered using a combination of: Lectures and Tutorials; Interactive Workshops; Case-Studies and Class Discussion; Industry Presentations; Company Visits; Guest Speakers; Research Seminars.
You will be encouraged to participate actively in discussions and group work, helping you to develop both your self-confidence and interpersonal skills.
The nature of any management and marketing course means that our graduates are broadly equipped to seek employment in the widest possible range of industries. The theoretical foundation and skills provided enable graduates to approach career opportunities with vision and flexibility, and to switch careers with greater ease, in line with their own changing career plans and with the entrepreneurial expectations of the modern economy.
Our recent graduates have found employment in a wide variety of industries, including: Education, Food & Drink, Financial Services, Information Technology, Travel & Tourism, Management Consultancy, Retail and Manufacturing industries. Over half the recent graduates from the course found immediate employment in companies like 2FM Radio, Apple, Cork County Council, Kerry Group, Musgrave Group, Linklift, Aon Hewitt, and a variety of other small to medium firms.
Support continues after graduation as we maintain regular communication with our graduates and aim to keep them informed of employment opportunities relevant to their career plans and ambitions. Where graduates desire it, we maintain a database of their current status as information for prospective employers.
The MBS (Management & Marketing) course is divided into two parts.
Part One: In Part One, from mid-September until early the following March, students will study a core selection of subjects in both Management & Marketing, along with the opportunity to specialise in either area of study, choosing from a range of elective subjects.
Core Subjects: Foundations of Management, Leadership & Strategy; Introduction to Marketing; Ethical Management & Marketing; Market Research; People and Organisations; Consumer Behaviour; Enterprise & Innovation; Marketing Communications; Leadership and Followership.
Elective subjects include*: New Product Development; International Marketing; Current Issues in Marketing; Contemporary Issues in HRM; Entrepreneurship and High Potential Start-ups.
Please Note: A student's choice is subject to availability and to approval by the course directors.
Students are also required to attend a series of one-day workshops. The content of these workshops is drawn from a wide variety of topics and may include: Marketing using social media; Presentation Skills, Project Management; Business Law; Media and Public Relations; Team-Building; Personal Communications Skillls; CV Preparation and Interview Skills; Raising Venture Capital.
Part Two: From April until late August students will pursue either a five-month research internship or an industry focused research/consultancy project that will apply and develop the learning from Part 1.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* The minimum requirement for applicants is a second-class honours grade in a primary degree without a significant management or marketing component (as adjudicated by the Programme Director, but normally less than 30 ECTS credits);
* Consideration may be given to applicants who do not meet the above criteria but who have sufficient relevant professional experience, subject to approval by the Faculty of Commerce.
* All students are required to complete a Supplementary Form (Candidate's Statement) as part of the application procedure.
English Language Requirements:
All applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit either an IELTS test or a recognised equivalent test as approved by the Faculty. The minimum requirement is an IELTS score of 6.5 with no individual section lower than 6.0. An exception may be granted where a candidate has been awarded a university degree where the overall content has been delivered in the English language.
