Suitable for science and engineering graduates who are looking to develop a career in environmental protection with commercially relevant skills. The course is designed both for students who have recently successfully completed their first degree and those who have several years´ work experience and wish to redirect or enhance their career in environmental protection.
Takes you on to a role in industry, education or the public sector, perhaps as a consultant, researcher or manager. The course is designed to prepare participants to meet the increasing demand for environmental scientists, advisors and officers. Graduates also go on to research degrees in environmental diagnostics.
You will be taught by a team comprising a combination of university staff and external experts who are practitioners in the subjects they deliver. Over the last 25 years Cranfield University has established itself internationally in the areas of environmental sensing and diagnostics. As such, teaching staff are uniquely placed to deliver this important course.
Course description
Environmental diagnostics is the process by which we assess an environmental situation and identify and quantify relevant components. We then design or implement solutions to reduce or eliminate the problems we have determined. This requires scientific knowledge of the environment, detection and monitoring techniques, remedial processes, as well as awareness of legislative frameworks and project management tools.
The course describes most topics from the basis of the underpinning science, the relevance and appropriateness of the topics in environmental situations and examples of their implementation. As well as benefiting from specialist technical modules, students will also develop a range of academic and transferable skills.
The course is accredited by the Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) The MSc course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project, and an individual design project.
Group project
The group project experience is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. It provides students with the opportunity to take responsibility for a consultancy-type project, working within agreed objectives, deadlines and budgets. For part-time students a thesis can replace the group project.
Individual design project
The individual project, usually in collaboration with an external organisation, provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research, think and work in an original way, contribute to knowledge, and overcome genuine problems.
Modules:
The modules include lectures and tutorials and are assessed through written examinations and assignments.
* Principles of Sustainability
* Evaluating Sustainability
* Process Emissions and Control
* Environmental Regulation in Practice
* Soil Plant Environment Science
* Water Quality Monitoring
* Risk management, Toxicology, Exposure and Health
* Pollution and Remediation Technologies.
The course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual research project.
The modules include lectures and tutorials, and are assessed through practical work, written examinations, case studies, essays, presentations and tests. These provide the 'tools' required for the group and individual projects.
The three elements of the course are assessed as follows:
The course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual research project.
Taught modules: 40%
Group projects: 20%*
Individual project: 40%
*For part-time students a dissertation can replace the group project.
The full-time course is of 12 months' duration. The modular format of the taught element permits a high degree of flexibility of attendance at Cranfield for part-time students who may commence the course at any time during the year.
Part-time
Part-time programmes are structured in a similar way to the full-time programme and comprise eight one-week assessed modules, a group project (or dissertation), and an individual project, which results in the production of a thesis. Part-time students are normally expected to complete their MSc in two to three years. The modular nature of the programmes allows students a degree of flexibility in the number and order of modules completed each year. Students may commence the course at any time during the year.
Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)
Delivered and assessed at Masters level, the PgDip represents the taught element of the associated MSc. Students are expected to complete eight modules and a group project.
Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)
Delivered and assessed at Masters level, the PgCert comprises a subset of the syllabus for the taught element of the associated MSc/PgDip course. Students are expected to complete six modules.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testCandidates must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or 2nd class UK honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Other relevant qualifications, together with considerable experience, may be considered.
