Applied Science - Marine Biology – (M.Sc.)

The aim of the MSc programme is to train and educate graduates in multiple areas of Marine Biology and to provide an understanding of the disciplines which impinge upon these areas in order to meet the growing demand for such personnel at home and abroad. In addition a number of professionally certified courses will be provided through the course (BL6015) equipping students with qualificaitons essential for work in the marine environment.

Please note that in addition to the fees quoted above, there is also a fee of €2,000 to cover the costs associated with undertaking the Professionally Certified Courses (Sea Survival, Boat Handling, Marine Radio Use and Occupational First Aid) as well as all fieldwork undertaken as part of the taught component of the programme.

The closing date for this programme has been extended to the 18th July, 2010, however, please note that late applications will only be considered if places become available after the first round of offers are made to the applications received before the initial closing date of 1st July.

Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate a clear understanding and integration of knowledge of marine flora and fauna, the marine environment and its biological and physical properties and processes;
* Assess the sustainability of exploitation (fisheries and aquaculture) and assess the impact of other anthropogenic factors on the marine environment;
* Define the roles of management and conservation across the marine environment;
* Demonstrate a wide range of research skills (field and laboratory) including safety related and professional qualifications;
* Apply the knowledge and skills acquired in this course in the working environment enabling the development of policy.
