The MSc builds on the Postgraduate Diploma in providing a high technical knowledge of physics for industrial applications. The content, both theoretical and experimental, is coupled with computing classes for applied physics. It is designed to give graduates a high level of training in optoelectronics, medical physics or computational physics.


Contents

During their First Year students will take 20 credits of core honours physics lecture units plus 20 credits of their chosen area of specialisation and prescribed laboratory vocational training. In Year 2 students take a further 20-25 credits of their chosen area of specialisation and 5-10 credits from either Management or a language.

Students will also undertake a 6-month. 30 credit research project which will be located in a research laboratory or an industrial or government setting where appropriate. Modules will be chosen for each individual student by the Head of Department in consultation with the Programme Coordinator.

It may be possible, at the discretion of the Head of the Department of Physics, to undertake up to 10 credits of the core syllabus in Second Year. The language/management option may be taken in either year.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Students must have a minimum of a second class honours degree in physics or a related subject. Students without this qualification can take the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Physics to qualify for entry to the MSc.

Eligibility - via the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science The MSc Degree will be by Mode 2 - Coursework, Examination and Dissertation for two years from the date of first registration for the programme. Those who obtain honours in the Postgraduate Diploma and who have also obtained at least a Second Class Honours in a relevant primary degree may proceed to the Second Year of the MSc in Applied Science (Applied Physics).
