The programme offers an internationally attractive and competitive education within conception, planning, design and analysis of large marine structures from strength, hydromechanic and holistic points of view.
The programme focuses on ships and offshore structures. The aim includes making the education attractive for students with a general interest in strength analysis, hydrodynamic analysis and systems engineering.
Specialised courses within these areas come together in the Marine Design Project, where technical solutions are developed to meet specific design objectives – e.g. for shipping, offshore energy or yachting purposes.
Who should apply
The programme was developed for students who do not have prior knowledge in naval architecture from the bachelor’s level. A solid background in mathematics, structural mechanics and fluid mechanics is required, however.
Why apply
The education allows originality when developing and applying ideas. The naval architect takes a generalist view and applies the disciplines from a holistic systems perspective – a combination that has proven useful in many different industries, outside the maritime sector as well.
Another aim of the programme is to give insight into the scientific foundation and proven experience found in naval architecture as well as insight into current research and development work, which also offer interesting career opportunities.
Naval Architecture at Chalmers is well known internationally, in particular for the research into computational hydrodynamics and related activities.
Career
Graduates obtain a suitable background for a wide range of roles and activities; for example:
* Ship owner: project manager – involves development of competitive transportation concepts as well as specification, purchasing and inspection of vessels on the international market.
* Equipment supplier: involves performance specification, product development, production and global sales of marine equipment and systems for propulsion, cargo handling, navigation, etc.
* Classification society: surveyor – involves inspection and surveying of ships on a global basis as well as development and implementation of regulations.
* Ship and offshore design consultant: design based on rules and regulations, new concept studies
* Shipyards and yacht manufacturers: design and production
* Maritime authorities: rules and regulations, inspection
* Naval administrations: project manager, specification, purchasing and inspection
* Universities: education and research
* Other: project management and design in other fields that require proficiency in structure and fluid mechanics

English Language Proficiency
There are several ways of proving that you possess the required level of English language proficiency. Most commonly this is done by submitting one of the approved English language tests.
The following language tests and minimum scores will be accepted as proof of English language proficiency when applying for Master's programmes at Chalmers (starting in 2012)
* IELTS (academic training), 6.5 (with no part of the test below 5.5)
* TOEFL (paper based): 575 (with a minimum of 4.5 on the written part)
* TOEFL (Internet based): 90 (with a minimum of 20 on the written part)
English language proficiency is also proven by the following
* Cambridge CPE or CAE English tests: Pass
| Minimal degree required: | Bachelor's degree |
| Minimal amount of work experience | Not specified |
| IELTS Band: | 6.5 |
| Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): | Grade C (Score: 60) |
| TOEFL Paper-based: | 575 |
| TOEFL Internet-based: | 90 |
