Course description
Design and innovation for sustainability is the consideration of the environmental, social and economic impacts of products, services and systems through the application of design-led thinking.
This course aims to address the engagement of design-led thinking with the business and social agenda for sustainable development. It does this through a unique focus on the multiple perspectives of design, management, engineering and science and their engagement in sustainability. Students develop knowledge and understanding of the global issues and agendas in sustainable development, design and business innovation strategies and user-centric product and service development. Students are encouraged to pose questions and explore sustainable solutions in response to these issues.
Students are introduced to ecodesign and design-led thinking tools and methods of developing project and programme strategies. This heightened awareness of other disciplines provides students with a platform to apply design thinking across disciplinary boundaries in industry.
The course is delivered through the Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D), a collaboration with the University of Arts London which aims to inspire organisations to apply design thinking to enhance competitiveness.
The MDes comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project and an individual project. Students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) complete the eight modules and the group project. Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) students complete six modules.
Group project
The group project provides students with the opportunity to undertake a consultancy-type project, addressing a real-life design for sustainability problem, while working under academic supervision. Success is dependent on the integration of various activities and working within agreed objectives, deadlines and budgets. It develops and refines students´ organisational, management and team-working skills. For part-time students a dissertation usually replaces the group project.
Individual project
The individual project provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research, think and work in an original way, contribute to knowledge, and overcome genuine problems in design and innovation for sustainability. Many of the projects are supported by external organisations.
Modules
The modules include lectures and tutorials, and are assessed through written examinations and assignments. These provide the tools required for the group and individual projects.
Compulsory Modules
* Concept Development and Prototyping
* Design Driven Innovation
* Strategic Communication and Brand Development
* Managing Innovation and New Product Development
* Principles of Sustainability
* Programme and Project Management
* Whole System Design
Elective Module (select one)
* Environmental Regulation in Practice

* Creative Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
The course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual research project.
The modules include lectures and tutorials, and are assessed through practical work, written examinations, case studies, essays, presentations and tests. These provide the 'tools' required for the group and individual projects.
The three elements of the course are assessed as follows:
The course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual research project.
Taught modules: 40%
Group projects: 20%*
Individual project: 40%
*For part-time students a dissertation can replace the group project.
The full-time course is of 12 months' duration. The modular format of the taught element permits a high degree of flexibility of attendance at Cranfield for part-time students who may commence the course at any time during the year.
Part-time
Part-time programmes are structured in a similar way to the full-time programme and comprise eight one-week assessed modules, a group project (or dissertation), and an individual project, which results in the production of a thesis. Part-time students are normally expected to complete their MDes in two to three years. The modular nature of the programmes allows students a degree of flexibility in the number and order of modules completed each year. Students may commence the course at any time during the year.
Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)
Delivered and assessed at Masters level, the PgDip represents the taught element of the associated MSc. Students are expected to complete eight modules and a group project.
Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)
Delivered and assessed at Masters level, the PgCert comprises a subset of the syllabus for the taught element of the associated MSc/PgDip course. Students are expected to complete six modules.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
