Takes you on to a rewarding career in the exciting and challenging fields of offshore gas and oil exploration, underwater engineering, pipeline engineering, technical diving, risk management in offshore and marine operations and the emerging offshore renewable energy industry.
You will be taught by experts from the research and academic staff within Cranfield's Offshore Technology Group, staff from other academic departments and industrial representatives.
Course description
The UK is a maritime nation, receiving a significant contribution to its economy from sea-related activities. It is estimated that these activities account for nearly 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provide employment for almost one million people.
Demand for well-qualified personnel with expertise across a number of fields is high and is likely to remain so. With teaching driven by up-to-date research and a history of expertise in this area, graduates of the Offshore and Ocean Technology course are well respected and highly sought-after by organisations operating in this sector.
The course aims to provide an understanding of the underlying science and engineering principles and relevant management techniques in relation to a student´s chosen specialisation. It will raise students´ awareness of recent technical developments within the relevant industries and improve communication, presentation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Students select one of five specialised options:
* Offshore Materials Engineering
* Offshore Renewable Energy
* Pipeline Engineering
* Risk Management
* Subsea Engineering.
This MSc course is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) for CMarTech and MIMarEST. All options are also accredited for CEng. In addition, the MSc has been approved by the Energy Institute (EI) for membership, and as meeting the Engineering Council (UK)´s Further Learning requirements for Chartered Engineer registration under UK SPEC.
Students on this course benefit from access to state-of-the-art corrosion laboratories, diving tanks, autonomous and remotely operated vehicles for undersea applications, and a hyperbaric chamber for deep water welding.
The course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project, and an individual thesis project. The modules provide the tools required for the group and individual projects.
Group project
There is a strong emphasis on applying knowledge in the industrial environment. As a result, a major learning experience for full-time students is the industrial group project. This involves working in teams to fulfil objectives within a time schedule, applying state-of-the-art technologies and approaches, and delivering results to a high, professional standard.
Individual thesis project
The individual thesis could be based within a company or on any relevant research area within Cranfield University. It provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate independent research ability, the ability to think and work in an original way, contribute to knowledge and overcome genuine problems.
These course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project and an individual project.
The modules include lectures and tutorials, and are assessed through written examinations and assignments. These provide the 'tools' required for the group and individual projects. The three elements the course are assessed as follows:
Taught modules: 40%
Group project: 20%*
Individual project: 40%
*For part-time students a dissertation replaces the group project.
The full-time course is of 12 months' duration. The modular format of the taught element permits a high degree of flexibility of attendance at Cranfield for part-time students who may commence the course at any time during the year.
The modules are intensive programmes, delivered as a series of professionally developed courses. Delegates receive lectures, tutorial and practical sessions such as workshops. Group working and interaction is encouraged on the programme. Course materials are provided that build up into a valuable resource.
Part-time
Part-time programmes are structured in a similar way to the full-time programme and comprise eight one-week assessed modules, a group project (or dissertation), and an individual project, which results in the production of a thesis. Part-time students are normally expected to complete their MSc in two to three years. The modular nature of the programmes allows students a degree of flexibility in the number and order of modules completed each year. Students may commence the course at any time during the year.
Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)
Delivered and assessed at Masters level, the PgDip represents the taught element of the associated MSc. Students are expected to complete eight modules and a group project.
Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)
Delivered and assessed at Masters level, the PgCert comprises a subset of the syllabus for the taught element of the associated MSc/PgDip course. Students are expected to complete six modules.
Advanced Professional Master of Technology (MTech)
The innovative MTech programme is unique to Cranfield. It combines taught course MSc study, company-based research, professional development and industrial experience. The total study period is two years and offers teaching and research to develop effective academic expertise as well as directly relevant industrial research experience to progress your career in your chosen sector.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
