The Master of Science in Business and Economics is a two year leadership and economics programme. Students entering this programme will take coursework together with students already enrolled in the integrated 5-year programme in Business and Economics (Siviløkonom).

As one of the largest business schools in Europe, BI has a strong faculty group with many renowned researchers that publish their research in top international journals and interact with the business community. The core fields of business such as financial economics, economics, marketing, management, strategy, accounting, auditing and tax are all represented by large research departments at BI.

As a Business and Economics student you will access to all these core fields of business. The program allows you to combine a specialization (major) in one of these fields, with a broader orientation into others. The ability to select and combine different subject - according to your interests and career plans - is unique for this Business and Economics program. As an example, you can combine a specialization into financial theory with studies in strategy or macroeconomic policy and business cycles, says Dag Morten Dalen, Associate Dean for the MSc in Busniess and Economics.

The Freedom to choose and combine

There are many more options. Business law and accounting may perfectly accompany studies in finance. A decision may look profitable from a financial point of view, but may be impossible to carry out because law prohibits it or because its legal consequences have been overlooked.

Specializing in strategy you will develop an action-oriented understanding of firms´ strategic processes and learn to master the relevant tools and methods of strategic analysis in an international setting. Marketing is the company function charged with defining customer targets and the ultimate method of satisfying their needs and demands competitively and profitably strategic function. We allow you to choose an indebt study in marketing in combination with strategy - or any of the other fields of specialization.

Business leaders and advisors need an understanding how economic policy shapes global and local economies and markets. Our macroeconomic courses focus on business cycles, inflation and long-run economic growth, and how monetary and fiscal policy affects the economy. Other courses in economics invite you into studies of strategic games between firms, and how markets are shaped competition and governmental regulation.

The combination of logistics, operations management and industrial networks represents a strong and crucial mix of subjects for managers to cope with current and future business challenges. The development in ICT, globalization and network organization makes this increasingly important, and our specialization in logistics provides you with an indebt understanding of these issues.

Courses in organizational psychology provide you with knowledge and expertise in the ways individual, group and organizational factors influence organizational performance, problem solving and decision making. The ability to combine studies in organizational psychology with studies of "hard core" finance and economics is unique to the Business and Economics program - and it makes you an attractive candidate.

Attractive candidates

This combination of specialization and versatility has made the Business and Economics program attractive to students - not least because employers for many years have found this program a highly attractive basis for recruitment.

Contents

The MSc in Business and Economics programme is a two-year, 120-ECTS-credit programme consisting of 90 course credits and 30 MSc thesis credits.

In this MSc programme, students choose a major as their main vehicle for specialisation. A 'major' consists of at least 36 credits in a concentration area. In addition students choose a minor consisting of 3-4 courses, or free electives.

Core courses provide a common methodological platform for all MSc students and are taken in the first year of the programme.

Specialisation courses cover fundamental issues in your specialisation area. Some of these courses are mandatory, while others are electives. In the second year of the programme, the specialisation courses may build on subjects covered in the first year and include more up to date research in the given field of study and elaborate on theories and models presented earlier. Make sure to check the prerequisites for the courses in your programme.

The programme culminates in the Master Thesis, which enables the student to pursue in depth a particular area of interest and develop a personal understanding of a leading edge issue in the field of specialisation.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Admission requirements for MSc in Business and Economics applicable for the August 2012 intake.

1. Requirements related to the Bachelor’s Degree

The following backgrounds qualify for admission to the MSc in Business and Economics programme:
• A successfully completed Bachelor’s Degree (180 ECTS credits) in the field of business administration, finance or economics.
• A bachelor degree in fields that have a strong quantitative component (such as Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics.) Students admitted with a different bachelor background than business should expect to spend a significant effort on familiarizing themselves with core concepts in economics, finance and accounting. This will be done through a combination of preparation courses prior to the start of the programme, self-study, and extra courses during the programme.

2. Grade requirement

The minimum Grade Point Average (GPA)* requirement is 3.50 on an ECTS scale where A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0, D=2.0 and E=1.0.

Applicants with the grade D or lower in individual courses may be refused admission on the basis of an overall academic assessment. Among other things, it will be taken into account whether the grade applies to a course that is considered to be of particular relevance to the programme.
Diplomas and transcripts using other grade scales than A-F will be assessed and compared with the Bologna A-F grade scale

*Calculation of GPA based on diplomas with alphabetical grades: Each alphabetical grade is substituted by numerical equivalent, A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0, D=2.0 and E=1. The numerical equivalent is multiplied by the number of credits for the course, and the individual products resulting from the multiplication of the credits by the numerical equivalent are added up for the courses that are included. The product total is divided by the total number of credits for the group of relevant courses. The quotient is calculated with two decimals.

3. Additional tests for applicants who do not hold a Bachelor’s Degree* from a Norwegian institution

GMAT or GRE

A good GMAT or GRE score is required for applicants. The minimum test score required for admission is:
• GMAT – a total score of 600
• GRE – a score of 660 (old scale)/152 (new scale) on the quantitative reasoning section and 570 (old scale)/158 (new scale) on the verbal section.

The Associate Dean of the programme may exempt applicants from the GMAT/GRE requirement. As a general rule, exemptions are given to the following categories of applicants:
• Applicants with a CAT score from India of minimum 90%
• Applicants with a degree from a Swedish, Danish, Finnish or an Icelandic institution
• Applicants with a degree from a partner institution
• Applicants with a degree from a partner institution

Other applicants can also apply for a GMAT/GRE exemption. The Associate Dean will grant or decline the exemption.

* or a Master’s degree, should that degree be the degree qualifying for admission.

TOEFL or IELTS

Applicants must take either TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum standards for test scores acceptable for admission are:
• TOEFL - a total score of 575 points for the written test or 233 for the computer-based version or 90 points on the internet based test
• IELTS- a score of 6.5

Exemptions are made for applicants:
• whose native language is English.
• who have two years or more of higher education where the language of instruction was English.
• from a country which is a member of the EU/EEA and/or the Council of Europe/UNESCO-Cepes and have English as the first foreign language taken over a period of at least 7 years in primary, secondary school and upper secondary education.

4. Ranking of Applicants

The admission requirements are minimum requirements that do not automatically give applicants a right of admission. If the number of qualified applicants is higher than the number of places, the applicants will be ranked according to qualifications. Applicants will be ranked on the basis of grade point average. If the grade point average is the same, applicants with a better GMAT score will be prioritized.

5. Special Assessment

In special cases the Associate Dean for the programme may approve other documented qualifications that are fully or in part equal to the admission requirements referred to above for academically strong applicants.

6. The Siviløkonom Title

To receive the title «Siviløkonom», one must have been admitted based on a Bachelor’s Degree that meets the NRØA (National Council for Economic and Administrative Studies) course requirements. For courses that form part of the NRØA course list, there must also be academic progression through the set of courses that has been chosen to ensure that these courses are not at the same level.

The NRØA course requirements are as follows*:

• Courses in Business Economics: A minimum of 30 ECTS credits
• Administration and Management: A minimum of 24 ECTS credits
• Methodology: A minimum of 15 ECTS credits
• Economics: A minimum of 15 ECTS credits

* These course requirements were adopted by NRØA on September 18, 2001 as a recommended plan for the institutions' design of Bachelor's Programmes in business administration. The requirements were adjusted by NRØA on 9 September 2002.

Accreditation

EQUIS

BI has had EQUIS accreditation since 1999 and was among the first to obtain this status. Accreditation is given for a maximum period of five years and re-accreditation was bestowed upon BI in 2004/05 and then again in 2010. The requirements that have to be met are raised each time and it is no “walk over” to be reaccredited based on former merits.

AACSB

BI was given membership in AACSB in 2008 and is well underway in its preparations for AACSB accreditation. The process differs from EQUIS in that the school must document that it meets the quality standard before it can enter the final stage of the process. This opens up for a fairly lengthy process that may last up to seven years. BI´s goal is to complete the process in 2013/14.

AMBA

AMBA accredits the institutions portfolio of MBA/DBA programmes (full time/part time). BI has undertaken to restructure and further develop its executive MBA programmes. In line with this development BI considers to enter an application for AMBA accreditation.

RANKING

Ranking differs from accreditation in that the institution is measured against the other participant schools based on a sett of criteria. These criteria are related to characteristics of the alumni, the programme and the institution. BI participates in two of the most renowned rankings for business education, the Financial Times Ranking and the Eduniversals Top Business Schools Worldwide.

Financial Times Ranking

The Financial Times ranking consists of five partial rankings, addressing specific programmes (customised programmes, master of science programmes, executive MBAs etc.), and a final school ranking. The most influential criteria pertain to alumni salary levels and carreer development, two factors that BI at best can influence indirectly. During the last two years, BI has been placed among the 60-65 best schools world wide, a result that we are moderately satisfied with. However, it is BI´s long term goal to climb in these rankings.

Eduniversal Top Business School Worldwide

Eduniversal allows a thousand participants annually. The ranking is based on the individual participants standing among the others. During the two recent years BI has been placed among the top twenty schools in Europe, along with such well renowned schools as London Business School, INSEAD and HEC School of Management.
