Programme Description
The Master of Arts in Cultural Translation is a unique initiative, the first of its kind. A recent panel at the Modern Language Association asserted that cultural translation is 'the most important concept in cultural theory today.' Translation has never been only a linguistic activity; the decisions of a translator imply a negotiation between two cultures, they create pathways for meaning where there were none, and engage intense ethical reflection on the relations among distant and conflicting worlds and lives. Translation is a creative and rigorous process with a long and rich history, as well as a vibrant contemporary theorization.
The field of Cultural Translation takes the creativity and rigor of the practice of translation, and the energy of contemporary and historical theories of translation, and brings them into debate with other areas in the humanities and in the social and political sciences, as we try to understand and to manage and to inhabit the forms of life that are emerging inter-nationally, trans-nationally, supra-nationally, and globally. Thought in this area is helping to reform and to challenge thought in cultural studies, post-colonial studies, the concept of post-modernism, comparative literature, and, as the epigraph from Ricoeur suggests, is helping to re-articulate the very idea of the humanities.

Learning Goals
The Master´s in Cultural Translation studies cultural meanings as part of processes of mobility, migration, and translation. Works of art and culture are considered within supra-national, international, and global contexts, such as empires, population migrations, trade systems, and the circulation of objects and representations. The academic core of the program - divided into historical and theoretical reflection and study of contemporary culture - feeds into consideration of cultural policy and creative and critical production.
Teaching is in small classes, with tutorial support for research projects. The program is ideal for students of the humanities looking to broaden the scope of their study and bring it to bear on contemporary global issues, for translators who wish to sharpen their conceptual tools and receive expert support for translation projects, and for those who wish to work in the international cultural industries. Students benefit from an integrated experience through the study of questions of cultural translation in a lively multicultural university in a cosmopolitan city, with an international and multilingual student body.
Students gain a responsible and solid understanding of linguistic and cultural diversity where they demonstrate the capacity to apply that understanding creatively and practically to linguistic, cultural, and political questions.
Students develop strong international research and presentations skills.
Students receive individual support over the whole year for their individual research or translation projects.
Students engage in dialogue between the humanities and the social sciences in relation to contemporary global issues

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Requirements
* Undergraduate degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or equivalent.
* Original, official transcripts form all universities and colleges attended Candidate´s Information Form
* 2 letters of recommendation (academic and/or professional).
* Please describe in English in approximately 500 words, what motivates you want to study Cultural Translation at the graduate level, what attracted you to this field, and what from your own academic and/or professional experience you can bring to program.
* Please provide evidence of fluency in written English and in one other language; if that other language is not French, you must demonstrate intermediate fluency in French. For students who do not already have intermediate-level French, an intensive summer preparation course is available.
* Please provide a sample of written work in English, maximum 10 pages, demonstrating knowledge and analytic ability in a Humanities subject.
* Candidate´s CV or Resume Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required. Clarifications and exemptions.
* TOEFL scores for applicants whose mother-tongue is not English or whose undergraduate education was not from an English language university.
* The EUR75 application fee. The application fee must accompany the application.
