International co-operation in matters of criminal law has risen dramatically in recent years, both as a response to the rise of cross-border crime and terrorism and through the development of supranational institutions (particularly the European Union). The LLM in International Criminal Justice details and examines the impact of these developments, asking whether international cooperation leads to an effective and even application of justice and a coherent body of law. Students study the theory of criminal justice systems, the development of international criminal law, procedures and institutions, the impact of human rights law as well as methods of law enforcement, punishment and the more traditional sociological and psychological theories of criminal behaviour.
The programme aims to encourage students to develop a critical awareness of the operation of international criminal justice, particularly in contexts that are perceived to be controversial or in a state of evolution. There is close co-operation with the MA in Criminology, run by the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research.
Students on the LLM and MA are able to take modules from both programmes. This includes modules on terrorism and on European criminal justice systems as well as criminological theory, research methods, youth crime, gender and cultural criminology.
The LLM in International Criminal Justice is designed for people who already work, or intend to work in a leading field of international criminal justice and the justice system.
The Master's degrees offered within the Law School are taught by seminar and dissertation.
You take three modules in each of the first two terms. These are normally assessed by a single essay of 4-5,000 words for each module, but some modules make special arrangements for assessment, for example, by requiring two essays of 2-2,500 words, or by awarding up to 20% of the marks according to the quality of student participation.
In the third term and during the summer period, you write a 15-20,000 word dissertation, under the supervision of a member of academic staff. This should be on a specific topic within the field of the degree.
For all of the Law taught Master's degrees, there is the alternative of studying for a postgraduate diploma. Students registered for the diploma take the same modules as a Master's student, but do not write a dissertation.
