Programme objectives:
The European Master’s in Translation Studies - Terminology is designed to address the growing need for professional translators on the Romanian, European and international markets. In line with current developments on the European scene, this master’s programme considers the guidelines of the DGT regarding a European Master’s in Translation, as well as professional standards issued by European and international standardization bodies (e.g. the most recent being EN 15038:2006 Standard for Translation Services. Service Requirements). The curriculum is thus constructed to develop translation competence at the highest level and to also cater for other manifold language professions that are now becoming recognized (including reviser, terminologist, subtitler and localizer). Our graduates will be equipped to work freelance and in-house in a variety of specialized domains (e.g. the law, public administration, science and technology, medicine, environment, and other social sciences) having also acquired the necessary marketing and management skills.
Course aimed at: graduates coming from all accredited higher education institutions who want to receive training as professionals in this interdisciplinary field, people who seek access to a labour market that is increasingly demanding and competitive.
The master studies represent the second cycle of the university studies. The MA programmes enable the students to further their research into a specific domain and they prepare the way towards their applying for the doctoral programmes. A master's degree corresponds to a two-year postgraduate program (120 ECTS credits, 30 ECTS in each semester). The curriculum of a master´s programme provides 14-16 hours a week. There are 4-6 disciplines in each semester.
Core disciplines:
Contemporary Romanian Language. Linguistic Principles of Textual Analysis and Production; English/French/German/Spanish Language and Cultural Studies; Information and Communications Technology; Contemporary Translation Theories; Terminology; Production of Functional Texts; Translation – A European Profession; English/French/German/Spanish from/into Romanian Specialized Translations (including Legal Translations, Subtitling and Localization); Translation Project; Research/Traineeship.
Special attention will be given to practical translation and terminological projects.
Thesis
The completion of master studies assumes a dissertation corresponding to 20 credits, beyond the 120 credits of the curriculum.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

§ Written test: translation from language B into language A; translation analysis (language B) and the drawing up of a bilingual glossary, computer editing included; proficiency and aptitude test (language C); proficiency test (language A);
§ Interview: statement of motivation, discussion on translation knowledge/experience; presentation of terminological project and general knowledge issues, as indicated in the bibliography;
§ The selection of candidates is based on the combined mark awarded.
Admission procedure
Non-EU citizens can enroll at Babes-Bolyai University based on the letter of acceptance delivered by the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation without having to pass an admission exam. Foreign applicants who want to enroll at Babes-Bolyai University as self sponsored students have two choices:
1. Submit their documents to the Department of European Affairs and International Relations within the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation (28-30, Gen. Berthelot Street, 010168 Bucharest, Romania, Phone no:+40 21 405 62 00).
2. Submit their documents directly to Babes-Bolyai University, Centre for International Cooperation (68 Avram Iancu St., 400083 Cluj-Napoca, Phone no:+40 264 429 762 ext 6023).
Self-sponsored EU citizens follow the same admission procedures as Romanian citizens. A precondition for application is the recognition of the study certificates (high school, BA) by the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation. Our office can assist EU citizens in gettingthis recognition, by collecting and sending their files further to the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation.
