This course, offered jointly with the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, is intended to bring psychoanalytic and philosophical perspectives into a productive interaction. It introduces students to the central elements of psychoanalytic thinking in Freud and later writers, as well as major issues in modern European philosophy.
The core of the MA is a Graduate Seminar in which contemporary issues are explored from both a philosophical and a psychoanalytical perspective. Options include advanced modules on psychoanalytic theory and psychoanalytic methodology, including the object-relations school and Euoprean thought from Nietzsche to Heidegger. The dissertation can be in philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, or any area of intersection between the two.
