The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

Building on our strong tradition of creative writing, our MA Creative Writing offers you a unique approach to the practice of writing with emphasis on innovation and experiment. Our wide variety of modules deepen your knowledge of literary tradition, and different modes and genres, in order to develop your practical skills of expression and invention. With planned readings and writing exercises in class, you expand your techniques, as well as your critical judgement of your own work.

Our creative writing teaching team has a breadth of experience in the literatures of different cultures and different forms. Our current teaching staff include internationally acclaimed novelist and critic Marina Warner, poet and short story writer Philip Terry, lyric writer Adrian May, poet, playwright and novelist Glyn Maxwell and award-winning playwrights Elizabeth Kuti and Jonathan Lichtenstein. Less formally, we have readings, talks and visiting writers and also currently host two Royal Literary Fund Fellows, who are professional writers on hand to help you develop your writing on a one-to-one basis.
