Programme Description

The aims of these courses are: to introduce students to techniques of linguistic description and central concepts in linguistics/applied linguistics/speech science and language processing: to proceed from this basis to more advanced study of central topics in linguistics/applied linguistics/speech science and language processing; and via the dissertation component to introduce students to research in linguistics/applied linguistics/speech science and language processing.

In each M.Phil. course, students take six modules and undertake a research project that is written up as a 20,000 word dissertation.

The modules are taught in Michaelmas and Hilary terms, and the dissertation preparation and writing takes place in Trinity term and the long vacation (July-September). Four core modules are mandatory and two are elective options.
Full-time students on the CLCS M.Phil. courses select one optional module per term; part-time students usually choose one per year.

Students take six modules and undertake a research project that is written up as a 15,000 word dissertation. The modules are taught in Michaelmas and Hilary terms, and the dissertation preparation and writing takes place in Trinity term and the long vacation (July-September).

Four core modules are mandatory and two are elective options.

Core modules include:

  • Describing Grammar;
  • Linguistic Meaning;
  • Describing the sounds of languages; and
  • Laboratory phonetics and phonology.

Options may be taken from the wide range of linguistics and phonetics courses offered by the Centre for Language and Communication Studies, including for example:

  • Linguistic pragmatics;
  • Phonology and the lexicon;
  • Technology, language and communication;
  • Advanced syntactic theory; and
  • Corpus linguistics

Requirements

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country. Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information

  • at least a 2.1 honors degree from an Irish university or equivalent result from a university in another country
  • a fluent command of the English language

Some courses may require higher standards or require you to take further tests or attend an interview.
Normally only graduates with language teaching experience are admitted to the course in Applied Linguistics.

  • IELTS: Grade 6.5
  • TOEFL: 230-computer based, 570 paper based
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Grade C
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Grade C
