The aim of this course is to introduce students to techniques of linguistic description to proceed from this basis to more advanced study of central topics in theoretical/applied linguistics via the dissertation component to introduce students to research in theoretical/applied linguistics.
This programme introduces students to the central concepts and the analytic techniques of general linguistics and phonetics. The course introduces students to the scientific study of the human faculty of language and is designed so that it requires no previous study of linguistics. The course involves both the study of theoretical models of language and the techniques of the linguistic and phonetic description of a wide range of languages.
Besides following a prescribed programme of study, which is assessed on the basis of six assignments, students write a dissertation of 20,000 words.
Students take six modules and undertake a research project that is written up as a 15,000 word dissertation. The modules are taught in Michaelmas and Hilary terms, and the dissertation preparation and writing takes place in Trinity term and the long vacation (July-September).
Four core modules are mandatory and two are elective options. Core modules include:
* Describing Grammar;
* Linguistic Meaning;
* Describing the sounds of languages;
* and Laboratory phonetics and phonology.
Options may be taken from the wide range of linguistics and phonetics courses offered by the Centre for Language and Communication Studies, including for example: Linguistic pragmatics;
