The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
Our MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is aimed at teachers of EFL at secondary level and above, offering an opportunity to update and extend knowledge of current concepts and theories relating to TESOL methodology and practice. There is a strong emphasis on the practical application of theory within an expanding global teaching environment, and this is reflected in the design of course tasks and activities.
This course will be particularly attractive to practising teachers who are unable to leave employment for a full-time course as the content of each term can be accumulated towards the full Masters award. You can progress from a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) to Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) to Masters (180 credits). Masters level includes a 12,000-word supervised dissertation based on original TESOL related research. Delivery is flexible, so you can study full-time for one year or part-time over two years, and we also offer modular study, which allows you to complete our course within a maximum of six years.
Our taught MA ensures that you develop professionally and personally, by relating the theory of TESOL to its practical application within the ESOL context. In addition to developing and extending your role as a classroom teacher, we provide training in the skills required to develop your professional career as a trainer, mentor, curriculum and materials designer, and, where appropriate, preparation for a PhD.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
