The M.Sc. in Economic Policy Studies (EPS) programme is a two-year part-time postgraduate programme designed to provide graduates with the skills to apply economic perspectives, approaches and related skills to the study of policy issues.

There is an in-take of new students every second year; accordingly the next student in-take will be for the academic year commencing September 2008. Staff from the Department of Economics, as well as where appropriate other staff from both within and outside the College, lecture on the programme.

The programme´s aim is to provide participants with a greater understanding of the economic policy process and the ability to engage confidently in evidence-based economic policy making.

It enables graduates to contribute effectively to the processes of economic policy formulation, change and implementation, using various concepts and methods in social science analyses. Policy making in any field requires a range of skills and analytical approaches; while this programme focuses on economic policy and on the economic analysis of other policies, the political economy context, both domestically and internationally, is also explored.

Contents

The MSc in Economic Policy Studies (EPS) two-year programme consists of both a taught and a research element. Modules are taught over three ten-week terms.

The first term takes place from late September to December and the second from January to March in Year 1. Lectures/Classes take place on Friday mornings and afternoons and on Saturday morning during that period.

Students undertake four modules (data analysis, modeling and research methods; understanding markets; Irish economic policy issues and context; and macroeconomic concepts and issues) and are formally examined in these subjects in April/May of Year 1.

The third teaching term takes place from late September to December in Year 2 and in this time two specialist courses are provided, namely project analysis and evaluation and competition and regulation.

Lectures/classes take place mostly on Friday mornings and afternoons during that period. Students are examined in these subjects in December of Year 2. The remainder of Year 2 is devoted to the completion of a dissertation.

Dissertation A major feature of the programme is the dissertation undertaken in Year 2. The dissertation should normally be related to a topic covered in one of the aforementioned specialist courses. Students work solely on their dissertations from January of Year 2 until the submission deadline at the end of July. The length of the dissertation should be between 15,000 and 20,000 words. Students are assigned a dissertation supervisor to guide them in their research.
