The course is intended as an introduction for well-qualified graduates to the history and theory of psychoanalysis. The foundation of the course is the two main readings of the Freudian text and the subsequent development of Freud´s ideas in two main directions.
First, the `object relations´ theory of Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion and second, the `return to Freud´ project of Jacques Lacan which is given substantial coverage. There is also an introduction to the thought of Carl Jung. A comparative approach to different thinkers is taken using discussion groups.
This one-year course at Trinity College examines psychoanalysis through a study of:
* psychoanalytic theory from Freud to the present
* the relations between psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice
* the uses of psychoanalytic theory in investigating culture, religion and the arts.
The course will be of interest to those seeking a grounding in psychoanalytic theory, as well as to practising analysts and therapists who wish to engage in research. It is not, however, a training course in analytic and therapeutic practice.
The course will include seminars on two major subjects of study in each of Michaelmas and Hilary terms.
In Michaelmas Term:
* the Freudian discovery
* the foundations of psychoanalysis
In Hilary Term:
* advanced developments of freudian discovery
* applications in Anthropology, religion, art and literature
There will be one two-hour lecture/seminar on the principles of psychoanalysis each week in Michaelmas and Hilary terms.
Students will write a dissertation for which preparation will be made in the tutorials.
