Programme Description

This programme will provide you with the ability to systematically develop, operate, maintain and retire large software systems - to become a software engineer in other words!

You can specialise in "processes" (planning, monitoring and controlling projects), "technology" (theory and fundamentals that underpin software design) or "design" (translating requirements into solutions).

Career opportunitiesAfter successful completion of the programme students can take on most roles in the software development process. This means there is a wide range of career opportunities within management, design, development and research in the industry aimed at employment with manufacturing companies, engineering firms, consulting organisations and suppliers.

Software engineers are increasingly found in many industries. Some aspects of software engineering also include computer engineering and computer science as well as electronics, automation and control, and software engineers therefore often interact with professionals in those areas. Graduates will be highly qualified to perform research and development, software systems engineering and management. Typical examples of job positions for a student are:

* Design Engineer: Designs and implements the software modules of a system
* Engineer: Designs test cases and carries out system testing
* Project Manager: Organises and leads a software development project
* Chief Engineer: Designs the system architecture and makes the key technical decisions
* Quality Manager: Selects processes and controls the software quality
* Doctoral Student: Studies and conducts research to obtain a PhD degree in computer science or computer engineering.

The program is based on the principle that product and system lifecycle development and deployment are the appropriate context for engineering education. Conceiving (C) , Designing (D), Implementing (I) and Operating (O) is a model of the entire product lifecycle.

The Conceive stage includes defining customer needs; considering technology, enterprise strategy, and regulations; and, developing conceptual, technical, and business plans. The second stage, Design, focuses on creating the design, that is, the plans, drawings, and algorithms that describe what will be implemented. The Implement stage refers to the transformation of the design into the product, including manufacturing, coding, testing and validation. The final stage, Operate, uses the implemented product to deliver the intended value, including maintaining, evolving and retiring the system.

Requirements

All international applicants must meet the requirements indicated under either section 1 or 2 below, as well as the requirements of English language proficiency. Also, there are specific requirements for each Master´s programme. All applicants must enclose documents of their formal qualifications, both their general and their specific eligibility. Only documentation from an internationally recognised university will be reviewed. The university has to be listed in the latest edition of the International handbook of Universities.

* Applicants who have completed a Bachelor of Science/Engineering degree equal to a Swedish Kandidatexamen of 3 years/180 HE credits minimum, fulfil the general entry requirements. Applicants enrolled in Master's programmes with no intermediate BSc degree must have completed at least four years out of a five year Master's programme.
* Applicants currently enrolled in studies are welcome to apply, but must not lack any more than one term until completion of a Bachelor's degree in accordance with section 1.

Once you have completed your Master's programme studies at Chalmers you may apply for a Diploma. Please note that Chalmers only awards a Master of Science degree to students who show original documents of a completed Bachelor´s degree upon request from the Office of Degrees.

Prerequisites: Programming, Mathematical analysis, Discrete mathematics, Linear algebra, Object- oriented design, Mathematical statistics, Algorithms and/or Data structures and Basic software engineering

A high level of spoken and written English is required. Chalmers accepts only these language tests and minimum scores:

* Cambridge CPE or CAE: Pass
* IELTS (academic), 6.0 (with no part of the test below 5.0)
* TOEFL (paper based): 550
* TOEFL (computer based): 213
* TOEFL (Internet based): 79

Attention
The TOEFL-code for Chalmers is 0050.
Neither Institutional TOEFL nor other certificates from universities are accepted as proof of your English proficiency. The TOEIC-test is not valid for academic purposes in Sweden.
